GameStop may be eyeing its biggest reinvention swing yet: a run at eBay.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the video game retailer has quietly built a stake in the online auction and resale platform and is preparing a possible acquisition offer. The report says GameStop could move as soon as late May 2026, though talks are still ongoing and no deal has been reached.
A takeover attempt with a major size gap
The reported plan stands out because eBay is far larger than GameStop by market value. eBay is valued at more than $40 billion, while GameStop is worth about $11 billion.
That makes any potential bid unusual from the start. It would be a smaller company trying to take control of a much bigger one, a move that would require serious financing, shareholder support, and a convincing argument that the combined business makes strategic sense.
The Wall Street Journal reported that GameStop has been accumulating eBay shares ahead of a possible offer. A proposal could arrive within weeks, but the situation remains fluid and may change.
