Scalping has turned plenty of trading card launches into endurance tests. One Tokyo retailer has responded with something more classroom than checkout: a Pokémon quiz.
According to a post on X by Ryo Saeba, first spotted by Dexerto, BicCamera Ikebukuro is requiring shoppers to answer a 15-question Pokémon test before they can buy Pokémon Trading Card Game products. Saeba said the questions are basic knowledge about the Pokémon universe, and that would-be resellers have reportedly been failing the test before they can get to the cards.
It is an unusual anti-scalper policy, but it also says a lot about the current state of the hobby. When a store has to check whether buyers know their Pikachu from their paperwork, supply and demand are not exactly in a healthy place.
How the quiz works
The policy is being used at BicCamera in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. BicCamera is best known as an electronics and camera retailer, but its stores also sell a broader mix of goods, including tech, toys, and other consumer products. That includes Pokémon cards, which have remained a prime target for resellers whenever a desirable set lands.
Saeba wrote that the store has introduced a mandatory Pokémon quiz for card buyers, with 15 questions that customers need to answer before purchasing. In a translated version of the post, Saeba said: “To fight scalpers, BicCamera Ikebukuro has introduced a mandatory Pokémon quiz. Fifteen basic questions about the Pokémon universe must be passed in order to buy cards. According to reports, resellers have not been able to pass the test.”
