The PSG-Rennes relocation will send Paris Saint-Germain’s opening Ligue 1 fixture to Roazhon Park after inspectors ruled the Parc des Princes pitch unsafe. The match remains scheduled for Sunday, August 23 at 8:45 p.m. local time, but supporters who planned to attend in Paris now have a rather different journey ahead of them.
The damaged surface followed a summer heatwave in France, although the Ligue de Football Professionnel’s public finding focused on safety rather than formally assigning blame to the weather.
Paris Saint-Germain informed the league body about the problem on August 17, according to L’Équipe. An independent pitch specialist and an LFP delegate inspected the ground on August 19 and concluded that its condition “did not allow the safety of the players to be ensured.” The competitions committee confirmed the venue change late the following day.
How will the fixture reversal work?
This is not simply a one-off move to a neutral venue. Rennes will now host the first meeting at Roazhon Park, while the return fixture on March 6, 2027 will take place in Paris, according to AS.
That gives Rennes home advantage for the opening weekend and hands PSG the same benefit later in the season. Whether either club considers the timing helpful is another matter. Rennes won the teams’ previous league meeting 3-1 on February 13, so PSG was already facing an opponent with recent evidence that the assignment is manageable.
