PSG-Rennes Relocation Swaps Home Fixtures

NewsPSG-Rennes Relocation Swaps Home Fixtures

The PSG-Rennes relocation will send Paris Saint-Germain’s opening Ligue 1 fixture to Roazhon Park after inspectors ruled the Parc des Princes pitch unsafe. The match remains scheduled for Sunday, August 23 at 8:45 p.m. local time, but supporters who planned to attend in Paris now have a rather different journey ahead of them.

The damaged surface followed a summer heatwave in France, although the Ligue de Football Professionnel’s public finding focused on safety rather than formally assigning blame to the weather.

Paris Saint-Germain informed the league body about the problem on August 17, according to L’Équipe. An independent pitch specialist and an LFP delegate inspected the ground on August 19 and concluded that its condition “did not allow the safety of the players to be ensured.” The competitions committee confirmed the venue change late the following day.

How will the fixture reversal work?

This is not simply a one-off move to a neutral venue. Rennes will now host the first meeting at Roazhon Park, while the return fixture on March 6, 2027 will take place in Paris, according to AS.

That gives Rennes home advantage for the opening weekend and hands PSG the same benefit later in the season. Whether either club considers the timing helpful is another matter. Rennes won the teams’ previous league meeting 3-1 on February 13, so PSG was already facing an opponent with recent evidence that the assignment is manageable.

PSG said the switch had been agreed with Rennes and thanked the club for making the match possible. It also acknowledged the inconvenience for supporters and others who had arranged to be at the Parc des Princes.

“Paris Saint-Germain fully understands the inconvenience caused by this change,” the club said, adding that it regretted the “exceptional situation.” Available reporting has not specified how tickets will be transferred or reimbursed. With the announcement arriving four days before kick-off, practical details are doing some fairly heavy work.

When will PSG return to the Parc des Princes?

PSG said it had identified a solution to replace the damaged pitch before its next scheduled Ligue 1 home game against Monaco on September 4. The club had argued that the existing surface could not provide satisfactory conditions, particularly for the players’ safety and physical well-being.

The disruption comes as PSG begins another domestic title defence after winning a record-extending 14th French championship. L’Équipe describes the club as having claimed the title in five consecutive seasons.

Sunday’s game is PSG’s first match of the new Ligue 1 campaign, but not its first competitive outing of the season. Luis Enrique’s side beat Aston Villa 2-1 in Salzburg on August 12 to retain the UEFA Super Cup, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Désiré Doué scoring. Four days later, Lens defeated PSG 1-0 in the Trophée des Champions.

That mixed start leaves the French and European champions heading into their league opener without their intended home crowd and with a pitch replacement already added to the early-season schedule. The fixture itself survived. The original seating plan did not.
