For fans who had gathered to see a music legend begin a new tour, the sudden halt was jarring. Concerts do have intermissions. They do not usually include everyone waiting to find out whether the headliner can safely stand up again.
Videos showed Richie sitting down mid-song
Footage shared on social media appeared to show Richie stopping to sit several times during “Dancing On The Ceiling,” which became his second-to-last song of the night.
He reportedly told the crowd he felt “dizzy” while on stage. The Minnesota Star Tribune reported that Richie told the audience: “When you’re feeling dizzy, sit your a** down.”
Another clip showed him looking unsteady as he walked across the stage while singing. He then paused unexpectedly and sat on the edge of a step, continuing the song from there.
After standing again and trying to move across the stage, he stopped less than 30 seconds later to sit down once more, still singing.
His final song turned out to be “Three Times A Lady,” performed from the piano bench.
Fans shared concern after the sudden ending
Audience members quickly began posting about the incident, with several saying Richie had appeared to signal that he was not feeling well before the show stopped.
One attendee named Greg wrote: “Hey now, our older, legendary performers are getting older, unfortunately. Sounds like he was just dehydrated, and the rider contract should always include 200 bottles of water.”
Another fan, Sharon, added: “I saw him last year when he was touring with Earth Wind and Fire. Both did amazing concerts. Hopefully he’s going to be okay.”
The Star Tribune reported that many people began leaving after Richie’s band exited the stage, before the final announcement confirmed he would not return.
The tour was just getting started
The St. Paul date was the first stop on Richie’s Sing A Song All Night Long tour with Earth, Wind & Fire.
The tour is scheduled to visit 26 cities through August 14, though there has not yet been any public update on whether Richie’s illness will affect upcoming shows.
For now, the main reaction from fans is less frustration than concern. Richie has spent decades making arenas feel familiar. On this night, the audience saw a performer trying to carry on while clearly struggling, and the decision to stop became the only sensible ending.
