Brian Austin Green's Sex Drive Changes With Age

CelebrityBrian Austin Green's Sex Drive Changes With Age

Brian Austin Green's sex drive has declined with age, according to the 53-year-old actor, although he says sex itself has become better and more meaningful. Both things can be true, inconvenient as that may be for anyone hoping for a simple answer.

The Beverly Hills, 90210 star discussed the subject on the August 29 episode of iHeartRadio's I Do, Part 2. Responding to a listener who asked whether men's libido decreases as they get older, Green answered, "Sure, absolutely, of course."

He attributed the change to testosterone, which generally falls as men age. "Sex drive lowers. There's no way to avoid that," he said. "I didn't ask for it."

Green added that sex now means more than the physical act. "It's the connection," he explained.

Does testosterone make lower libido inevitable?

Green's broad point has some medical support, but his conclusion is more categorical than the evidence allows. Testosterone levels generally decline by about 1% a year after age 30, according to the Endocrine Society. That does not mean every man will develop low libido, nor does it mean testosterone explains every change.

Sexual desire can also be affected by medications, obesity, health conditions, stress and relationship factors. Symptoms alone do not establish testosterone deficiency, also known as hypogonadism.

Doctors generally require symptoms and at least two low early-morning fasting testosterone measurements before making that diagnosis. A commonly used threshold is around 300 nanograms per deciliter.

Green said men can take supplements to push in the opposite direction. The Endocrine Society, however, says testosterone is not approved as a general anti-aging treatment. So the situation is slightly more involved than buying a bottle and waiting for youth to file a return request.

A July 2026 statement from the organization cited a trial involving more than 5,200 men. Testosterone treatment did not produce a meaningful increase in heart attacks or strokes over one to four years, but researchers observed roughly a 50% relative increase in pulmonary embolism and more fractures among treated participants.

Why does Green say sex has improved?

During a July episode of the same podcast, Green said sex had "absolutely" become better with age. He credited that improvement to paying less attention to his own insecurities and more to the experience of his fiancée, former Dancing With the Stars professional Sharna Burgess.

"I am way less concerned with how I feel in it and my own insecurities," Green said. Instead, he focuses on what Burgess likes and avoids what she does not.

Lower desire and better intimacy are not necessarily contradictory. One concerns frequency or intensity, while the other involves communication, comfort and emotional connection. Green's comments suggest his priorities have shifted from performance toward partnership.

He contrasted that approach with his relationship with actor Megan Fox. Green and Fox were married from 2010 until 2021 after spending nearly 15 years together. He said their relationship began with physical attraction and developed around it.

After their separation, Green wanted to approach dating differently as a divorced father. He said he preferred to build a friendship and genuine connection first, rather than treating attraction as the foundation and hoping everything else would eventually cooperate.

How did his relationship with Sharna Burgess differ?

Green said he and Sharna Burgess were direct about their strengths and flaws when they began dating. They "put it all on the table," he recalled, rather than presenting polished versions of themselves and scheduling the difficult information for later.

"Your approach to a relationship is the best way to know if it's just a purely physical connection," he said. Green argued that attraction alone eventually fades if the two people cannot tolerate each other.

Burgess and Green welcomed their son, Zane, in June 2022 and became engaged in July 2023. Their family routine is now entering another busy period as Burgess prepares to return as a professional dancer for Season 35 of Dancing With the Stars.

The season premieres September 15 and marks her first appearance as a professional dancer on the show after five seasons away. Burgess told Extra that four-year-old Zane "loves watching mama dance" as she trains for the comeback.

Green also shares three children with Fox: Noah, 13, Bodhi, 12, and Journey, 10. His eldest son, 24-year-old Kassius, is from his previous relationship with actor Vanessa Marcil.

What else changes desire with age?

Green's podcast cohost Bob Guiney, 55, offered a less chemical explanation. Younger men may think about sex constantly, he said, while work, parenting and other responsibilities increasingly compete for attention over time.

Referring to his younger wife, Jessica Canyon, Guiney added, "You can't just sit on the couch all the time and expect to be the guy that's ready to go."

That observation fits the wider medical view more closely than Green's claim that a lower sex drive is unavoidable. Hormones matter, but so do health, sleep, medication, stress, family schedules and the relationship itself.

Green's larger point is less disputed: aging has changed how he thinks about intimacy. Desire may be less automatic, but connection now carries more weight. For him, that appears to be a reasonable exchange, even if his testosterone explanation needs a little less certainty and a little more laboratory work.
