Trainer Mark Twight later told ABC News that Cavill gained about 20 pounds during the process. Twight said the actor occasionally used pizza to reach the calorie target, proving that even Superman sometimes has to complete the least tragic assignment imaginable.
The food supported a demanding training programme rather than acting as a shortcut. Cavill described “pushing my body beyond its normal limits, putting on a lot of muscle mass and just making myself look like Superman.”
Seeing the finished result apparently made the effort feel real. “I turned around and looked in the mirror and you can’t really play it cool,” he said. “I thought, ‘OK, holy hell, this is real, it’s not a joke anymore.’”
How far along is the live-action Warhammer project?
Cavill has followed Warhammer since he was 10, making the Amazon adaptation a genuine personal project rather than another franchise contract politely described as a childhood dream.
He remains attached to star in and produce the live-action series alongside producing partner Natalie Viscuso. Cavill said they brought in horror filmmaker Mike Flanagan, whose credits include The Haunting of Hill House, to work on the script. He also reported “considerable advances in story.”
His character remains undisclosed, but Cavill has been unusually firm about his involvement.
“Rest assured, I most certainly will” remain the lead, he wrote, adding that the identity of his character “shall remain a secret for now.”
Some details are less settled than early reports suggested. PC Gamer and BBC News confirmed that Flanagan is developing the script, while TheWrap reported that he was still discussing a wider role that could include writing, directing and serving as showrunner. Amazon has announced no release date, production start or character details.
Games Workshop has also warned investors that successful adaptations could take years to reach audiences. In other words, the project is advancing, but nobody should begin planning a premiere-night costume just yet.
Why is Amazon developing two Warhammer series?
The live-action production is only one part of Amazon’s approach. In August 2026, a separate animated Deathwatch series entered development at Blur Studio, with Cavill serving as an executive producer. Dave Wilson is co-creating and directing it.
That gives Cavill two roles in Amazon’s expanding Warhammer plans:
- Star and producer of the live-action Warhammer 40,000 adaptation
- Executive producer of the animated Deathwatch series
Warhammer 40,000 is a science-fiction miniature wargame set in a vast, violent future, not merely a fantasy-flavoured board game. Its universe contains numerous factions, military orders and centuries of fictional history, giving Amazon plenty of material and plenty of opportunities to discover that more material does not automatically make adaptation easier.
Amazon’s agreement with Games Workshop covers films, television projects and related merchandise based on Warhammer 40,000. It also includes an option to secure equivalent rights to Warhammer Fantasy after the first 40,000 production.
What is at stake for Games Workshop?
The partnership has commercial importance beyond Cavill’s enthusiasm. Games Workshop described its arrangement with Amazon as long term, while its latest annual figures show why licensing remains attractive and unpredictable.
For the year ending 31 May 2026, the company reported at least £625 million in core revenue. Licensing revenue, however, fell to at least £30 million from £52.5 million a year earlier. The miniature business is growing, but income from outside adaptations and games can move sharply in either direction.
A successful screen franchise could strengthen that licensing operation and introduce the setting to viewers who have never painted a miniature soldier. A poorly received one would join the lengthy catalogue of ambitious adaptations that discovered extensive lore is not the same thing as a workable television script.
Cavill’s Superman preparation had a straightforward target: eat, train and add muscle. Building a coherent Warhammer universe across live action and animation may take considerably longer, with fewer pizzas available as an obvious solution.
