“Even though I don’t know a lot about rap music, I’ve come to know that you are the very best at it,” she wrote.
Eminem performed a medley spanning his career, including “My Name Is,” “Rap God,” “Sing for the Moment,” “Stan,” “Forever” and “Not Afraid.” Steven Tyler of Aerosmith joined him for “Sing for the Moment,” while Ed Sheeran appeared during “Stan.”
Parton attended the same lengthy ceremony, accepted her induction and performed. Yet the two artists never formally crossed paths. A later report claiming she was absent conflicts with official Rock Hall records and contemporary coverage of her appearance.
What did Parton say about their connection?
The letter moved beyond a standard professional congratulations. Parton told Eminem she felt an affinity with him that she could not fully explain.
“I hope what I have to say will not seem weird or strange to you but I have always felt some unexplained connection to you like I know you somehow,” she wrote.
She added that she had hoped to meet him during the ceremony but missed the opportunity amid the event’s general chaos. Parton was not especially diplomatic about awards shows either, writing, “Personally I hate ’em.” Concise, efficient and difficult to misinterpret.
She encouraged Eminem to continue making music and reminded him that his work reached people in ways he might not see.
“No matter how complex your world may be just know you are very special and touch people in ways you don’t even know,” she wrote, signing the message, “With love & respect, Dolly Parton.”
Eminem said that even as someone who grew up listening mainly to rap, he regarded Parton as “an icon” and “a superstar in every sense.” He ended his tribute by thanking her for the kindness and writing, “Rest easy Dolly.”
Their shared induction challenged genre rules
The missed meeting carries an extra irony because both artists arrived at the 2022 induction with questions hanging over genre boundaries.
Parton initially said she did not believe she had made enough rock music to deserve a place in the Hall of Fame. Eminem, meanwhile, used his acceptance speech to underline that he was a rapper entering an institution built around rock history.
Their presence in the same class showed how broadly the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame had come to define the music and influence it recognizes. Parton later treated the induction as a creative assignment. It helped inspire Rockstar, her 30-track rock album released in 2023.

How did Dolly Parton die?
Parton died on August 25 at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center following what publicist Marcel Pariseau described as a “brief battle with cancer.” Her family said she died peacefully while surrounded by loved ones. The type of cancer was not disclosed.
