MusicBeatles Licensing and Merchandise Deal Goes Global

A new Beatles licensing and merchandise deal will put Universal Music Group in charge of a broad range of products and commercial partnerships tied to the band. The worldwide exclusive agreement with Apple Corps covers physical and digital merchandise, licensing and e-commerce.

That gives Universal Music Group an extensive role in managing how Beatles-branded products reach fans, just as several large projects prepare to introduce John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr to yet another generation. Apparently, the Beatles business still has room to grow.

Lucian Grainge, chairman and chief executive of Universal Music Group, called the group “one of the most iconic and enduring cultural brands of all time.” He said the company would work to protect and expand the band’s legacy through fan experiences that remain faithful to its music and history.

Grainge also described the agreement as a continuation of relationships developed over the past 14 years, adding that building on them was among the highlights of his career as a lifelong Beatles fan.

How does the deal connect to the four Beatles films?

The agreement arrives before The Beatles – A Four Film Cinematic Event, director Sam Mendes’ ambitious set of four biographical films. Each movie will focus on the group from the perspective of a different member, because one Beatles biopic was evidently considered too restrained.

The main cast includes:

  • Harris Dickinson as John Lennon
  • Joseph Quinn as George Harrison
  • Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr

The four-film project is currently in production and scheduled for release in 2028. Its arrival is likely to generate fresh demand for Beatles music, memorabilia and other licensed products, making the timing of the Universal agreement less than mysterious.

Apple Corps chief executive Tom Greene said the company was “delighted” to begin the new global merchandising partnership. He pointed to both the films and a planned London attraction as major reasons this is an especially active period for the company.

“The Beatles’ message has never been more relevant or needed in the world today,” Greene said, adding that Apple Corps expects to reach millions of fans through the projects now in development.

What is planned for the Beatles site in London?

Apple Corps is also preparing an immersive fan experience at 3 Savile Row in London, due to open in 2027. The address carries considerable Beatles history: it housed the company’s headquarters and was the site of the band’s rooftop concert on 30 January 1969.

The planned attraction will extend across seven floors and feature archival material, a merchandise store and a recreation of the studio where Let It Be was recorded. Visitors will also be able to revisit the rooftop performance at the building where it actually happened, which should at least reduce arguments about historical authenticity.

The London project forms part of a wider effort by Apple Corps to develop exhibitions, experiences and commercial releases around the group. The company was established in 1968 to manage the Beatles’ creative and business interests.

Despite the familiar fruit in its name, Apple Corps has no connection to the technology company founded by Steve Jobs. That distinction has required occasional legal clarification over the decades, but the latest agreement concerns music, films, fan attractions and merchandise rather than phones.

With the London experience set for 2027 and Mendes’ films following in 2028, Universal Music Group and Apple Corps now have a substantial calendar of Beatles-related activity ahead. The music may be timeless, but the retail strategy is keeping a very precise schedule.
