Western Europe just posted its hottest June on record, with average temperatures running more than 3C above the 1991-2020 norm, according to the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service. That is not a marginal statistical wobble. It is the kind of number that shows up clearly on both a climate chart and, less comfortably, in hospital admissions and mortality data.

Copernicus said the region’s average temperature reached 20.74C in June, driven largely by a severe heatwave in the second half of the month that broke records in several countries. Across the globe, June’s average temperature was 16.54C, which is 0.56C above the 1991-2020 average for the month.

How unusual was June’s heat in Europe?

The June heat was also 1.39C warmer than the estimated pre-industrial June average for 1850-1900, Copernicus reported. That comparison matters because it is the baseline commonly used to track long-term global warming, rather than the more recent climate many people already consider normal.

In Western Europe, the signal was especially sharp. A regional average more than 3C above the late-20th and early-21st century baseline is a large deviation, not simply a warm spell with better publicity.

The heatwave arrived after a run of extreme weather events and came alongside dry conditions in parts of southwestern Europe. Copernicus said those dry conditions helped fuel wildfires, while also pointing to the broader challenges Europe is expected to face as heat events become more frequent and more severe. The continent, inconveniently for anyone hoping otherwise, is the fastest-warming in the world.

What made the heatwave so dangerous?

The heatwave produced what meteorologists often call a “heat dome,” a high-pressure system that traps hot air beneath it. The usual kitchen comparison is a lid on a boiling pot. It is not poetic, but it is accurate enough to be unpleasant.

Thousands of deaths across Europe have been linked to the June heatwave, with most reported in France, Spain and Belgium. An analysis by the AFP news agency found that more than two-thirds of Europeans, around 410 million people, experienced temperatures above 35C during the event.

Samantha Burgess, strategic climate lead at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, which operates Copernicus, said humidity played a major role in the severity of the episode.

“It was extremely humid, which then meant we people didn’t get relief at night. So we had a number of tropical nights in a row,” Burgess said.

In practical terms, that means bodies had less chance to recover after daytime heat. Night-time cooling is not a luxury in a heatwave. It is part of the survival mechanism.

Why warmer seas made nights worse

Copernicus also reported record ocean warmth for June. The average sea surface temperature across oceans outside the polar regions reached 20.86C, the highest ever recorded for the month.

The Mediterranean experienced a record-breaking marine heatwave, while hot spells also affected Europe’s Atlantic coasts. Warm seas can intensify heat stress on land by reducing the cooling effect normally provided by nearby water.

“When the sea is warm, we get less alleviation at nighttime because there’s no coolness coming from the ocean. There’s no sea breeze,” Burgess said.

That matters for coastal cities and towns that often rely on evening cooling to soften peak summer heat. When the sea itself is unusually warm, that natural relief is reduced. Ecosystems are also at risk, with marine heatwaves capable of disrupting habitats, stressing species and altering food chains.

What did Copernicus find beyond Western Europe?

The June heat was not limited to one region, even if Western Europe set the most striking record. Globally, the month was significantly warmer than the 1991-2020 average, and sea surface temperatures set a June record outside the polar regions.

Copernicus also noted that dry conditions increased drought risks in Eastern Europe. In the Iberian Peninsula and southern France, those conditions contributed to wildfire activity. Heat, dryness and fire risk are not separate storylines so much as a deeply unhelpful group project.

The service bases its regular climate reports on computer analyses that combine billions of observations from satellites, ships, aircraft and weather stations worldwide. It publishes data on global surface temperatures, sea ice and precipitation, offering one of the clearest running accounts of how the climate system is changing.

The June figures do not prove that every hot day or fire was caused by climate change in a simple one-to-one sense. Weather still varies. But the broader pattern is well established: a warmer climate raises the odds of more intense heatwaves, and Europe is seeing that risk arrive with very little subtlety.
