The current Europe heatwave is not just another uncomfortable spell of summer weather, according to a new analysis from the World Weather Attribution group. Scientists said the extreme June temperatures across the continent were the region’s “most severe” heatwave ever tracked for the month, and would have been “virtually impossible” 50 years ago without human-caused climate change.

The report, released on Friday, places the event inside a fast-moving pattern: dangerous heat is becoming more frequent and more intense as the planet warms. Not exactly the sort of record anyone puts in a tourism brochure.

How severe are the June temperatures across Europe?

Millions of people in France, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe have endured extreme heat this week, with daytime temperatures in many places climbing above 40 degrees Celsius, or 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

By Friday, the heatwave was shifting eastward, bringing the threat of similar conditions to Germany and central Europe. Western parts of the continent had already seen dozens of deaths linked to the heat, pressure on medical services, and disruption to economic activity.

World Weather Attribution said the broader weather setup itself was not especially rare. The problem is what that pattern now produces in a warmer climate: temperatures that would once have been far less likely, and far less intense.

What did scientists compare it with?

The researchers compared this June’s heat with earlier European hot spells, including June 1976, another period remembered for persistent high temperatures. Their estimate: a heatwave with similar characteristics in the climate of 1976 would have been about 3.5 degrees Celsius cooler.

They also compared the event with conditions around the 2003 European heat episode. In that climate, the same kind of heatwave would have been about 2 degrees Celsius cooler, the analysis suggests.

That does not mean every hot day has one neat cause. Weather still varies naturally. But the study’s conclusion is that the intensity now observed cannot be explained by natural variability alone.

The report said such events are now “tens to hundreds of times more likely since only 2003 and virtually impossible just 50 years ago.”

What role did climate change play?

“This event would not have been possible in June without climate change,” Theodore Keeping of Imperial College London, the study’s lead author, told reporters.

The planet has already warmed by about 1.4 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, driven mainly by the burning of coal, oil and gas. Scientists have long warned that warming increases the odds and severity of heatwaves, alongside other forms of extreme weather.

Friederike Otto, cofounder of World Weather Attribution, put the finding plainly: “The weather pattern itself is not particularly unusual, but the temperatures are, or at least they used to be without human-induced climate change.”

To put it another way, the atmosphere is running the same basic plays with a much hotter squad. The result is less charming than the metaphor.

How many cities are breaking heat records?

World Weather Attribution analysed nearly 850 cities across Europe. Around 45 percent had either broken, or were expected to break, their all-time heat stress records in June.

Heat stress reflects the danger posed by conditions to the human body, not simply the number on a thermometer. High temperatures become especially hazardous when combined with factors such as humidity, limited night-time cooling, and exposure in dense urban areas.

The June episode is also the second major European heatwave this year. In May, an early-season burst of heat brought conditions more typical of high summer to central and western Europe.

What do researchers say needs to happen next?

World Weather Attribution said a rapid phase-out of fossil fuels is “critical if we are to avoid even higher temperatures and their consequences in the future”.

That warning is not new, but the timing is increasingly hard to ignore. Europe is now seeing dangerous heat arrive earlier, spread widely, and push records that were previously considered exceptional. The science is not saying heatwaves never happened before. It is saying the baseline has changed, and the consequences are already measurable.
