Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has given a heavy hint that an England World Cup bank holiday could be announced if Thomas Tuchel's team win the tournament. The caveat, because reality insists on attending these things, is that England still have to get through three more matches.
What did Starmer say about an extra day off?
Asked about the prospect of an additional bank holiday in England if the team lift the World Cup, Sir Keir did not commit outright. He did, however, leave the door very much open.
"On the question of a bank holiday, I think I don't want to jinx it, but ask me again if we get to the final," he said.
That is not a formal announcement, obviously. It is a political version of putting the champagne in the fridge while insisting nobody touch it yet.
As currently understood, any extra day off would fall on the Friday after a potential England victory, which would be 24 July.
