PS5 Pro Shortage Follows GTA 6 Netflix Hit

EntertainmentPS5 Pro Shortage Follows GTA 6 Netflix Hit

The PS5 Pro shortage arrived just after Rockstar Games gave GTA 6 a 26-minute Netflix showcase, leaving only two major UK retailers with stock at the time of writing. The timing is persuasive. Actual sales data proving that the broadcast caused the rush is less cooperative.

Very and Sony’s PlayStation Direct store still listed the console at its standard £789.99 price on September 2. Amazon, Argos and Currys were sold out, including Amazon’s refurbished inventory. The console had reportedly been easier to find before the GTA 6 presentation premiered on August 27.

That does not establish direct cause and effect, but GTA has rarely needed much assistance convincing people to spend money.

How large was the GTA 6 Netflix audience?

Netflix recorded 31.1 million views and 14 million viewing hours for the GTA 6 extended look between August 27 and 30. It ranked as the platform’s most-watched film of the week and finished first in 87 of the 93 countries tracked by Netflix.

The result fell well short of Netflix’s record debut, held by Stranger Things Season 5 with 59.6 million views, but this was still a 26-minute promotional programme for a video game. That is not exactly Netflix’s traditional definition of a film, though the service classified it as one anyway.

On YouTube, the presentation had attracted about 17 million views by September 2. GTA 6 Trailer 1 has reached 294 million, while Trailer 2 stands at 181 million. Those figures are not clean comparisons. The trailers are only a few minutes long, and TheWrap noted that Netflix uses a higher viewing threshold than YouTube.

The premiere also delivered a significant traffic bump for Netflix. Sensor Tower measured a 35% rise in US Netflix app users during the broadcast hour, while PC Gamer reported that web traffic more than doubled at points. Netflix appears to have found a new form of appointment advertising, only viewers must first enter a streaming service to watch the advertisement.

Did GTA 6 really cause the console sellout?

The sequence is clear: Rockstar released the programme, millions watched it, and PS5 Pro stock became difficult to find soon afterwards. The missing piece is retailer or Sony sales data directly connecting those events.

GamesRadar found a similar shortage in the United States, where PlayStation Direct was the only major retailer offering the PS5 Pro at its $899 list price. Amazon and Walmart marketplace sellers asked as much as $1,299, while completed eBay sales reached roughly $1,200.

British resale prices were also rising. Many eBay listings remained below £1,000, but one seller wanted more than £3,500 for an unboxed 30th Anniversary model. Hope remains free, at least.

Axios reported another sign of unusually high demand around the game itself. Sensor Tower estimated that GTA 6 had already accumulated nearly five million pre-orders. That estimate does not show how many customers also bought a new console, but it helps explain why retailers may be feeling pressure three months before release.

The shortage could become more severe as the November 19 launch approaches, particularly with Christmas demand and wider component supply problems. Sony has not detailed any plan to increase PS5 Pro production.

What does PS5 Pro actually improve in GTA 6?

Sony said in June that GTA 6 “will play best on PS5,” and the PlayStation Store labels the title PS5 Pro Enhanced. Neither Sony nor Rockstar has explained what those enhancements include.

Rockstar confirmed that the impressive footage shown on Netflix was captured on a standard PlayStation 5, not a Pro. That matters for anyone considering a £789.99 console mainly because of what they saw in the presentation. The demonstrated version already delivers the visuals that prompted much of the excitement.

Digital Foundry called the footage “the most impressive example of real-time game rendering” it had seen. Its analysts also judged 60 frames per second to be “extremely unlikely” on current consoles, including PS5 Pro. The more powerful hardware may provide sharper image quality, more stable performance or enhanced visual settings, but Rockstar has announced none of those details.

Sony raised the PS5 Pro’s UK recommended price to £789.99 on April 2, 2026. It remains considerably more expensive than the standard PS5 and does not include a disc drive. Paying that premium without knowing the exact GTA 6 benefits requires a level of confidence publishers generally appreciate.

Which platforms will run GTA 6 at launch?

GTA 6 will launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Rockstar has not announced a PC edition, despite widespread expectations that one will follow later.

For people who do not already own a current-generation console, the PS5 Pro is the most powerful PlayStation option available. That makes it an understandable choice for players who want the best possible console version, even if “best” has yet to receive a technical definition.

The extended presentation also suggested that buyers will have plenty to play. Rockstar North co-head Rob Nelson told The New York Times that his playthrough lasted around 80 hours, including optional objectives capable of affecting the story.

Anyone determined to buy a PS5 Pro before launch may therefore face a simple decision when stock appears at the official price. Waiting could bring more information about performance, but it could also bring more reseller listings with ambitious arithmetic.
