Oprah Winfrey has revisited a Whitney Houston stage fall that, by her account, was kept from becoming a tabloid spectacle after she personally appealed to the studio audience not to share the photos.
Speaking at France’s Lumière Theatre while receiving the Cannes LionHeart Award, Winfrey said the incident happened during Houston’s final appearance on her show. According to Winfrey, Houston had recently relapsed and was under the influence when she fell off the stage.

Winfrey said she thought the moment could have changed the way the public saw Houston, and not for the better. Winfrey said the audience had cameras, so photos of the fall could have ended up with tabloids or other media outlets.
Instead, Winfrey said she asked the people in the room to keep the incident private.
“I begged them not to put those pictures out, because it would ruin her life. And they did not,” Winfrey said.
