CelebrityTheo James Punctures Meghan Markle Casting Rumors

Theo James has offered a dry response to the Meghan Markle casting rumors surrounding Season 3 of Netflix’s The Gentlemen. Asked whether the Duchess of Sussex might join the Guy Ritchie series, he suggested another royal-adjacent candidate had already secured a role.

“Yes, Fergie is joining,” James told Town & Country on Wednesday, referring to Sarah Ferguson, the former wife of Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. The 41-year-old actor added that Ferguson would be playing his love interest.

It was, in case anyone had started updating the cast list, a joke.

What Theo James said about Season 3

James described the speculation as “mainly a lot of hot air” and said the immediate priority was promoting the newly released second season.

“At the moment, we’re just trying to get as many eyes on Season 2, and then Season 3 will happen soon,” the Divergent and The White Lotus star said.

Netflix launched The Gentlemen in March 2024, with Season 2 premiering Thursday. The crime comedy has also been renewed for a third installment, although James indicated that many details remain undecided.

The actor, who received an Emmy nomination for The White Lotus, said the show has broader plans for future episodes.

“We’re going to expand the world, go to different countries,” he explained. “But in terms of the minutiae, I mean, it’s still very much up in the air.”

That leaves plenty of room for casting reports, speculation and the usual entertainment-industry fog in which an inquiry can quickly become a supposed deal.

Why Meghan Markle’s name entered the discussion

Netflix executive Manda Levin encouraged the speculation at the Edinburgh TV Festival in August. When asked whether Markle could appear in the series, she replied, “All bets are off.”

Deadline later reported that the Duchess was being considered for an unidentified role. The Hollywood Reporter said the part “is currently being written,” although it remained unclear how many episodes Markle might appear in.

A source said there had recently been entertainment-industry inquiries and that Markle was considering possible projects. The same source stressed that “nothing is confirmed right now.”

Markle’s representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment. James, meanwhile, offered no indication that talks had advanced beyond rumor, leaving Sarah Ferguson’s entirely fictional romantic subplot as the most concrete casting development available.

How Markle’s reported UK move fits in

The series films in and around London, making Markle’s reported move back to the United Kingdom relevant to the casting chatter, if not evidence of anything.

Markle recently relocated from Montecito, California, with Prince Harry and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. The family arrived in Britain on August 26, six years after Markle and Harry stepped back from royal duties and left England.

Sources said the couple returned to live closer to King Charles III. They are also reportedly searching for a home in the North Cotswolds.

Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5, are expected to attend a private British preparatory school costing more than $35,000 a year, according to the report.

For now, proximity to a filming location is about as substantial as the evidence gets. Season 3 is coming, its creative details are still being developed, and Markle’s possible involvement remains unconfirmed.
