The Meghan Markle casting rumour has earned a blunt response from Theo James, who says talk of the Duchess of Sussex joining The Gentlemen amounts to “a lot of hot air.” Netflix has renewed Guy Ritchie’s crime series for a third season, but it has not announced Markle, confirmed negotiations or supported claims that a proposed role was withdrawn.
That has not stopped the subject dominating interviews around the launch of Season 2. As promotional strategies go, repeatedly asking actors about a casting decision that may never have existed has proved remarkably efficient.
What did Theo James say about the rumour?
Asked by Town & Country whether Markle might join the Netflix series, James first suggested a different royal connection.
“Yes, Fergie is joining,” he joked, referring to Sarah Ferguson. “She’ll be playing my love interest.”
He then gave a more direct answer: “No, I think that was mainly a lot of hot air.” James said the immediate priority was attracting viewers to the second season before work moved ahead on the third.
The actor, who plays aristocrat turned reluctant criminal Eddie Horniman, said the team has a broad plan to expand the story into other countries. The detailed plotting, however, remains “very much up in the air.”
James has used a similar joke before. In an interview with Extra, he claimed Prince Harry would play one of his love interests before dismissing the Markle reports. He separately told the Press Association that the rumours appeared “spurious” and said the practicalities of hiring her would be difficult.
Other cast members have responded with similar scepticism. Vinnie Jones, who plays Geoff Seacombe, called the reports “hot air,” while Ray Winstone noted that he did not even know whether he would appear in Season 3. Hugh Bonneville offered perhaps the most practical assessment, describing the story as “a genius piece of marketing.”

The speculation gathered momentum in late August, when Variety reported that Markle was in very early discussions about appearing in the third season. No contract, character or completed agreement was identified.
Markle previously starred as Rachel Zane in Suits before stepping away from acting as her relationship with Prince Harry became more serious. The reports about a possible return arrived around the couple’s visit to the United Kingdom from California, adding the predictable royal layer to an otherwise ordinary casting story.
Manda Levin, Netflix’s director of scripted series in the UK, encouraged further interest when she responded to questions about Markle by saying: “All bets are off.” That was not a casting announcement, although it was treated with considerably more enthusiasm than its actual content justified.
Former Vanity Fair and The New Yorker editor Tina Brown later claimed the proposed casting had been withdrawn following an intense British backlash. Brown wrote that the reaction made it “untenable to go forward” and argued that this did not bode well for a UK acting comeback.
Netflix has not confirmed Brown’s account. It has also never formally announced Markle as part of the cast. Netflix had not yet published its weekly global viewing total, so the full size of the audience remained unclear. The international rankings nevertheless suggested that the series was hardly struggling for attention.
The Markle reports provided another stream of publicity during that launch. Cast members were asked about her at interviews and premiere events, producing headlines even when their answer was simply no. Giancarlo Esposito said someone with Markle’s public profile could be either an advantage or a drawback. Bonneville’s marketing theory looked increasingly reasonable.
The result was a useful promotional cycle: an unconfirmed report generated questions, denials generated more coverage, and the absence of a definitive Netflix statement allowed the subject to continue. Television marketing sometimes requires trailers, posters and advertising budgets. Sometimes it only requires three words from an executive.

Netflix has formally renewed the show, but public comments offer conflicting impressions of its production schedule. James said the creative team knows the overall direction while the finer story details remain unsettled. ITV News, meanwhile, quoted Vinnie Jones saying work on the third season would begin “next week.”
Those remarks do not necessarily describe the same stage of production, but they leave basic questions unanswered. Development, writing and filming are separate processes, and neither comment establishes whether scripts are complete or when cameras will begin rolling.
What is clear is that the series plans to keep expanding beyond its original English country-estate setting. James said the creative ambition involves travelling to different countries, although he offered no specific destinations or plot details.
The third season therefore exists as a confirmed Netflix project, not merely an actor’s optimistic suggestion. Its cast and story remain less settled in public. Markle’s involvement is especially unsupported: no official announcement, no named role and no confirmation that the reported talks progressed beyond an early stage.
