Olivia Wilde Says Co-Star Saved Her Life

CelebrityOlivia Wilde Says Co-Star Saved Her Life

Olivia Wilde says Walton Goggins saved her life during a horse stunt that went dangerously wrong on the set of Cowboys & Aliens.

The 42-year-old actor revisited the incident while speaking on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, describing a chaotic Western action sequence involving Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Wilde, and dozens of horses charging across the desert. In theory, it was a heroic ride into battle. In practice, it nearly became something much worse.

What happened during the Cowboys & Aliens stunt?

Wilde starred in Jon Favreau’s 2011 sci-fi Western alongside Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Sam Rockwell, Paul Dano, and Walton Goggins.

On the podcast, she said the scene required her, Craig, and Ford to gallop at full speed with around 40 horses behind them.

“Walt Goggins saved my life on that movie,” Wilde said. “He did. I had a very bad horse accident, and he saved me.”

She explained: “It was me and Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford galloping, like, full sprint across the desert with 40 horses behind us. And it was like we were leading the charge to fight the aliens or whatever.”

That “or whatever” is doing a lot of work for a movie called Cowboys & Aliens, but the danger was not remotely theoretical.

How Walton Goggins stepped in

Wilde said her horse jumped over a large ditch during the take, then bucked her off in a violent fall.

“So sure enough, this horse jumps and bucks me off in the craziest way,” she said.

“I fell off. I hit my head and my back, and I was laying [on the ground] but, unfortunately, I was on the other side of this kind of lip of dirt, meaning that all horses behind couldn’t see me. And there was also a lot of dust.”

Wilde said she could hear the approaching horses before she could see anything clearly.

“I remember having my ear to the ground and I could hear it and it sounded like thunder, like they were coming towards me,” she said.

“And I had the thought, it sounds so dramatic, but I thought, it’ll be quick. It’ll be like, pulverized applesauce. Out.”

According to Wilde, Goggins saw what had happened and reacted immediately. She said he turned his horse sideways in front of her, blocking the charge and forcing the other riders to split around them.

“Walt Goggins had seen [me] ahead of him and in a split second thought to turn his horse sideways right in front of me and let everyone kind of bash into him,” she said.

“And he’s a great rider, so he was able to handle that. People split the two sides around us thinking he had just gone insane, but he was protecting my body on the ground. And so I owe him my life. It’s crazy. He’s a real-life hero.”

Why the moment still lands years later

Wilde’s story cuts through the usual polished talk around movie stunts. Big action scenes often arrive on screen looking seamless, with dust, speed, and danger carefully shaped into entertainment. Wilde’s account is a reminder that sometimes the dust is real, the horses are real, and the margin for error is extremely small.

That split-second decision helps explain why Wilde talks about it so bluntly. This was not a colleague offering a steadying hand after a bad take. She described a situation where she was on the ground, hidden by terrain and dust, as a herd came toward her.

For viewers, it’s a human footnote to a film remembered more for its odd genre mashup than its behind-the-scenes drama.

What was Cowboys & Aliens about?

Cowboys & Aliens opened in July 2011. Directed by Jon Favreau, the film mixed a traditional Western setting with science fiction.

Set in 1870s America, it follows rival outlaws, wealthy cattlemen, and Apache warriors who are forced to work together after aliens attack their town, abduct residents, and mine for gold.

The cast included:

  • Olivia Wilde
  • Daniel Craig
  • Harrison Ford
  • Walton Goggins
  • Sam Rockwell
  • Paul Dano

Despite its star-heavy lineup and generally positive reviews, the film was widely seen as a box office disappointment.

Wilde also spoke recently about Harry Styles

Wilde’s podcast comments came after she made headlines earlier this month for discussing her relationship with Harry Styles.

Wilde dated the former One Direction singer, now 32, for nearly two years before they split at the end of 2022.

Speaking on the Call Her Daddy podcast with Alex Cooper, Wilde said she understood that the relationship “really did upset people.”

She also praised Styles for how he dealt with the intensity around his fanbase.

“I think it also had a lot to do with the kind of parasocial relationship people have with him, which is a burden that is very weighty and not something I envy,” Wilde said. “He carries it with grace.”

Between that reflection and the Cowboys & Aliens story, Wilde has been looking back at moments where fame, pressure, and real danger got uncomfortably close. One of them, she says, ended safely because Goggins knew exactly what to do.
