CelebrityLeigh Francis Facial Injury Alarms Fans

A Leigh Francis facial injury caused by a fan’s fingernail has left the comedian counting himself lucky after a close call near his eye.

The 53-year-old, best known for playing Keith Lemon and hosting Celebrity Juice, shared the aftermath on social media after DJing at Sound Bites festival in Syon Park. Francis said he had gone into the crowd during his set when an excited fan reached for his face and accidentally scratched him with a long thumbnail.

What happened at Sound Bites festival?

Francis explained the incident shortly after returning to his room from the festival. In a video to fans, he said the crowd had been enjoying the set when one person got a little too enthusiastic.

“Oh, hello. I’ve just got back to my room, been DJing. Went into the crowd, and someone was overcome with joy, so that was a nice feeling,” he said.

“So she went: ‘I love you!’ and put her hands towards my face and her thumbnail, which was quite long… did that.”

He then turned his head to show a red gash running from near his hairline down toward his eye. The scratch appeared to stop only narrowly short of the eye itself, which is not usually where anyone wants audience participation to end up.

“Could’ve been worse, could’ve gone in my eye but yeah bit of a naughty one that, innit?” he added.

In the caption, Francis joked: “I guess I’ve gotta stop going into the crowd. Gonna have to put a bit of vinegar on pet. Stinger!”

Friends and fans reacted with concern

The post quickly drew messages from friends and followers, many of them alarmed by how close the injury appeared to be to his eye.

Stephen Paulson wrote on Instagram: “Blimey! Even I didn’t do that with you and I had Wolverine claws! Heal fast mate!”

Jason Penny Cooke took a darker comic route, asking: “Jesus, what was she, Edwina Scissor Hands?”

Others kept it simpler. Dolls wrote on TikTok: “Omg Leigh that’s awful.”

P21cey added: “Jeeez! Pal, I hope you’re ok,” while AndreaR commented: “Ouch! I’m glad you are OK!”

The reaction was part sympathy, part disbelief, which is fair enough when a night of music ends with a facial wound that looks like it wandered in from an action film.

He followed up in character as Avid Merrion

Francis later posted a follow-up video as another of his alter egos, Avid Merrion, while filming a “day in the life” style clip from the second day of the festival.

The injury became a running feature of the video. At one point, he jokingly pointed out a woman and said: “This is the lady that clawed my face with overexcitement.”

Recounting the moment again, he said “all the joy left [his] body” when the scratch happened. He also offered a practical, if slightly pointed, piece of festival advice: do not get “too drunk” while having a good time.

Francis still leaned into the joke, saying the mark made him look like a “sexy action man.” He also suggested that next time he might perform as The Bear, another of his characters, because apparently even fingernails might think twice before taking on a full costume.

Francis has been focused on live work since Celebrity Juice

In recent years, Francis has been putting more energy into live comedy and music. The festival injury is unlikely to be listed as a perk of that career shift, but it has not seemed to slow him down.

His move away from regular television came after ITV cancelled Celebrity Juice in 2022. The panel show, fronted by Francis as Keith Lemon, had been one of his best-known TV projects.

In September, he said he “doesn’t know” if he will return to television.

“Juice will never come back… someone asked me when I’m back on TV and I said I don’t know,” he said.

He added: “I did say it’s pretty difficult doing things these days without offending people.”

Francis said he still had ideas, but added: “I don’t think comedy is commissioned as easily as back in the day.”

For now, live shows and DJ sets appear to be where he is putting his attention. The crowds are clearly responding. Possibly too physically, in one specific case.
