James Franco and Izabel Pakzad Hit Cannes

CelebrityJames Franco and Izabel Pakzad Hit Cannes

James Franco and Izabel Pakzad made a rare red carpet appearance together in France, stepping out on May 12 during the Cannes Film Festival for the screening of The Electric Kiss.

Franco, 48, arrived in a classic black tuxedo with a bow tie, keeping black sunglasses on for much of the carpet because Cannes, apparently, provides both cinema and aggressive sunlight. Pakzad, 30, wore a sleek black dress with open-toed heels and a thick silver necklace, with her long hair worn loose.

A relationship that has become more public

Franco and Pakzad, an actress and filmmaker, have been dating since 2017. For much of that time, they kept their relationship relatively low-profile, especially as Franco pulled back from public life.

That has shifted in recent years. The couple have appeared together at more industry events, including Cannes, where they have been seen together for the last three years. The latest appearance places them back in one of film’s most visible settings, which is not exactly a subtle way to re-enter public conversation.

Their outing also comes as Franco has spoken more openly about how his personal life changed during a long period away from mainstream Hollywood work.

Why Franco stepped back from the spotlight

Franco’s absence from the public eye followed sexual misconduct allegations made in 2018 by five women, four of whom had been his acting students.

In 2019, two of those former students filed a lawsuit against Franco and his associates Vince Jolivette and Jay Davis. The case was settled two years later. According to settlement documents obtained at the time, the three men agreed to pay more than $2 million.

Franco avoided most interviews during that period, but he addressed the lawsuit in 2021 during an appearance on The Jess Cagle Show. In that interview, he acknowledged having slept with some former students, while saying the encounters were consensual.

The allegations and lawsuit significantly changed his standing in the entertainment industry. Franco was largely pushed out of Hollywood in the immediate aftermath, and his acting work slowed as the public and professional response continued to play out.

What Franco has said about the fallout

In 2024, Franco reflected on that period in an interview with Variety, saying the experience forced him to reassess his behavior and priorities.

“Being told you’re bad is painful,” he said. “But ultimately, that’s kind of what I needed to just stop going the way I was going.”

He also described the break from acting as a chance to examine what he wanted his life to look like outside the usual machinery of work, attention, and professional momentum.

“I guess what I seek to fulfill me in life [is different],” he said. “Ultimately, I think I’m kind of grateful because it did afford me a chance to just do whatever private work and really change what I need to change.”

Those comments framed his absence not just as a career pause, but as a personal reckoning. That is a complicated public message, given the seriousness of the allegations and the fact that his return to visibility is still being watched through that history.

How Pakzad fits into this chapter

Franco has also connected this period of change to his relationship with Pakzad. In the same Variety interview, he said he had put more time and attention into his personal life than he had before.

“I put a lot of time into my personal life,” he said, referring to Pakzad. “I’ve had a relationship for seven-and-a-half years. I was never able to do that before. I was just too scared, really, to have any sort of real intimacy with anyone.”

For audiences, the Cannes appearance is not just another formalwear photo opportunity. It marks a continued public phase for a couple who spent years largely outside the red carpet cycle, while Franco’s professional reputation and future in Hollywood remained under scrutiny.

Their appearance at The Electric Kiss screening does not erase that context. It does show that Franco and Pakzad are increasingly willing to be seen together in major industry spaces again, with Cannes serving as one of the more polished backdrops available.
