Irina Shayk's Venice Film Festival look came directly from Dolce & Gabbana's archives. The 40-year-old model attended the September 6 screening of The Echo Chamber in a black satin dress first seen on the Italian label's Spring/Summer 2003 runway.

The design featured large cutouts on both sides, connected by a network of black laces. Shayk wore black satin briefs underneath, adding knee-high socks and pointed satin stilettos. A shimmering silver mesh choker completed an outfit that did not appear overly concerned with subtlety.

Reuters confirmed Shayk's appearance at the red carpet screening during the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. Vogue France and Vogue España also identified the dress as the 2003 design originally modelled by Gisele Bündchen.

Was the dress from Kim Kardashian's collection?

Early coverage linked the outfit to Dolce & Gabbana's Spring 2023 collection, curated with Kim Kardashian. That collaboration drew from the fashion house's designs between 1987 and 2007, with selected pieces subtly reworked for a new runway show.

The overlapping references appear to have caused some confusion. Multiple later reports described Shayk's garment as an original archival piece rather than the Kardashian-era reissue. The distinction matters in fashion, where a 20-year-old dress and a careful recreation can apparently require separate historical records.

Bündchen's 2003 runway styling included Dolce & Gabbana's prominent “SEX” slogan choker. Shayk replaced it with a silver version, keeping the dress intact while avoiding the need to place the message in capital letters around her neck.

OE24 separately claimed the design had previously been worn by Bella Hadid, although its report did not explain how that assertion fitted with the documented 2003 runway appearance.

Why was Shayk at the festival?

Shayk's visit involved more than attending a premiere and providing photographers with useful material. Corriere della Sera reported that she received the Filming Italy Venice International Award on September 6.

Award founder Tiziana Rocca said Shayk had turned “talent and her image into an international language” and had become an influential figure in contemporary fashion. The honour placed her festival appearance in an awards context, rather than treating it solely as another celebrity red carpet booking.

The Echo Chamber is a 123-minute competition film directed by Andrea Pallaoro. It stars Luca Marinelli, Alicia Vikander and Susan Sarandon, and was developed from an unfinished screenplay by Bernardo Bertolucci.

Pallaoro said the film examines the boundary between intimacy and dependency, as well as the point where care becomes control. That is rather heavier material than the usual discussion of shoes, although Venice traditionally finds room for both.

What else did Shayk wear in Venice?

Away from the screening, Shayk continued the archival theme with another all-black outfit. She wore a heavily beaded cropped jacket and pleated trousers from Givenchy's 2015 collection, designed by her close friend Riccardo Tisci.

“So special to wear Riccardo Tisci Givenchy couture in Venice, a piece of fashion history brought back to life,” she wrote on Instagram. Shayk thanked Tisci for creating something “so extraordinary” and said the outfit made her feel incredible.

Vogue Italia later documented a softer change of direction: a stone-coloured stretch dress paired with Ferragamo's new Cara bag. The appearance expanded her festival wardrobe beyond black archival pieces, proving that even a carefully established theme may be allowed an afternoon off.

The Venice festival runs through September 12. Other attendees have included George Clooney and Amal Clooney, Laura Dern, Robert Pattinson, Kendall Jenner, Vittoria Ceretti and Stella Maxwell.
