iPhone Duo Opens Apple’s Foldable Era

EntertainmentiPhone Duo Opens Apple’s Foldable Era

Apple has unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable smartphone and the defining product launch of newly appointed chief executive John Ternus. It opens to reveal a 7.6-inch display, runs a redesigned version of iOS 27 and starts at $1,999, because folding a phone apparently does not extend to folding the price.

Pre-orders begin on October 16, with sales starting October 23. Buyers can choose star white or night sky finishes, storage ranging from 256GB to 2TB and, worldwide, eSIM-only cellular service.

Ternus, who succeeded Tim Cook on September 1, introduced the device with Apple’s familiar “one more thing” line. He said it would “redefine the experience of using a foldable phone.” The larger question is whether Apple can redefine the market around it.

What do the two displays offer?

The outer screen measures 5.4 inches and provides, according to Apple, 90% of the usable display area found on the iPhone 18 Pro. Unfolding the device reveals a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR panel that is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max screen.

Both displays support ProMotion, Always On functionality and peak outdoor brightness of up to 3,000 nits. Apple has applied a nano-texture finish to the inner panel to reduce glare and make the central crease less obvious. The crease has not vanished. Physics remains employed.

A FaceTime camera sits beneath the folding display, while authentication comes through Touch ID in the side button rather than Face ID. Apple Pencil support is due later in 2026.

The body uses Grade 5 titanium, and the hinge contains more than 100 components. Apple has also secured an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, a notable claim for a category filled with hinges, moving parts and opportunities for pocket debris.

At 254 grams, the handset measures 11.3mm thick when folded and 5.2mm when open, according to Wired. It is thinner than any previous iPhone while unfolded, but it remains heavier and thicker when closed than Samsung’s Fold8, which weighs 201 grams and measures 9.7mm folded.

How does iOS 27 use the folding screen?

iOS 27 adjusts its interface according to how the device is folded, positioned or rotated. The major addition is Split View, which allows two iPhone apps to run side by side for the first time.

Users can save app pairings, open two windows from the same application and place Siri AI beside another app. Netflix, Zoom and Slack are among the services already being adapted for the larger display. Whether every developer treats the extra space thoughtfully, rather than simply stretching an existing interface, will become clearer after release.

StandBy works even when the phone is not charging. When the Duo is placed partially folded on a surface, it can display a clock, photos or widgets without requiring a separate stand.

The shape also creates new photography options. Owners can use the rear cameras for selfies while checking the composition on the outer screen. Duo Preview lets the person being photographed see the frame before the picture is taken, removing at least one traditional excuse for an unfortunate group photo.

What performance and battery life does Apple promise?

The foldable uses the same A20 Pro chip found in the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple claims it delivers up to 35% better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro, supported by a custom vapor chamber that manages heat across the slim chassis.

A battery sits on each side of the hinge. The company advertises up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display and 44 hours on the outer screen. Alternating equally between both panels provides up to 24 hours of use per charge.

Wired charging can bring the battery to 50% in about 20 minutes. Wireless charging takes roughly 30 minutes to reach the same level.

Other connectivity details include:

  • Wi-Fi 7
  • Bluetooth 6
  • Apple’s C2 cellular modem
  • Worldwide eSIM-only operation

The camera system includes a 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera with 2x optical-quality zoom and a 48-megapixel Fusion Ultra Wide camera. The main sensor can record 4K video at 120 frames per second.

Can Apple make foldable phones mainstream?

Foldable devices still account for less than 5% of smartphone sales, CCS Insight analyst Ben Wood told the Associated Press. He described Apple’s arrival as an entry into a “niche foldable smartphone category,” which is accurate but perhaps not the phrase marketing executives will print across the launch event banners.

International Data Corporation previously forecast 20.6 million foldable shipments in 2025 and expected the category to grow by 30% in 2026. It projected that Apple could claim more than 22% of foldable unit sales and 34% of the segment’s value during its first year.

That gap between units and revenue explains much of the attraction. IDC estimates that foldables sell for about three times the average price of conventional smartphones. Apple does not need everyone to want one. It needs a comparatively small group to want one very expensively.

The company is also arriving well after Samsung popularised the format. The Atlantic’s Will Oremus argued that a folding iPhone appearing seven years later is unlikely to transform the category, particularly at a price comparable to a MacBook Pro.

What does the $1,999 price include?

The starting price covers the 256GB model, while configurations extend to 2TB. In the United States, Apple will offer financing or leasing from $57.99 per month. That softens the immediate total without making the device less expensive, a distinction monthly payment plans prefer customers not examine too closely.

The pricing places the phone firmly above Apple’s standard flagship range and alongside premium laptops. It also asks buyers to accept more weight than Samsung’s latest rival in exchange for Apple’s software integration, familiar services and first attempt at foldable hardware.

This launch matters beyond one unusually expensive handset. It is the first major product statement of the Ternus era, complete with Steve Jobs-era presentation language and a device category Apple allowed competitors to develop first.

No major changes to the timetable have emerged since the announcement. Pre-orders remain scheduled for October 16, followed by general availability on October 23. The hardware case is clear: two capable displays, flagship performance and software designed around the hinge. The commercial case depends on whether Apple can turn a small, high-priced category into a larger, even more valuable one.
