His lawyers have criticized conditions at Rikers
This is not Weinstein’s first trip to Bellevue’s prison ward. In 2024, he was taken to the same hospital unit after what his representatives described as a lack of adequate medical care and “deplorable and inhumane conditions” at Rikers Island.
At the time, his lawyer said the hospital visit followed an “alarming” blood test result. The complaints about his treatment in jail have continued as Weinstein’s criminal cases have moved through the courts.
Earlier this year, Weinstein described prison as a “death march” while addressing the court. He said: “I know I was unfaithful, I know I acted wrongly, but I never assaulted anyone.”
He also said: “The isolation is unbearable. My body is failing,” describing Rikers, where he said he had been held for two years, as “a slow march toward death.” Grim language, yes, though subtlety has not exactly been a feature of this case.
The wider legal context behind Weinstein’s custody
Weinstein has faced rape or sexual misconduct allegations from more than 100 people, with some accusations dating back to the 1970s. He has denied all allegations against him.
The allegations against him became a central catalyst for the Me Too movement, which pushed sexual violence and abuse of power in the film industry, and far beyond it, into public view.
In 2020, Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison after being convicted of rape and sexual assault in New York. That conviction was later overturned by the Court of Appeal, a decision that shocked many survivors, advocates, and observers of the case.
He was later convicted again in 2025 on a sexual assault charge and has been awaiting sentencing.
A guilty plea deal had reportedly been considered
In early January, reports said Weinstein was considering a guilty plea deal as his health and imprisonment remained under scrutiny.
His comments in court earlier this year leaned heavily on his physical decline and isolation, while he continued to deny committing assault. That combination has defined much of his recent legal posture: acknowledging personal wrongdoing in broad terms, while rejecting the criminal allegations against him.
For the many people who came forward publicly, the medical developments do not change the scale of what the case represents. Weinstein’s fall remains one of the most consequential reckonings in modern entertainment, not because Hollywood discovered misconduct was bad, which would have been a low bar, but because the public finally heard just how many people said they had been ignored.
For now, Weinstein remains under treatment at Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward, with no confirmed date for his return to Rikers.
