EntertainmentGTA 6 Launch Week Sales Could Hit $5.2B

The emotional contract between Rockstar Games and its audience is unusually simple: wait many years, watch two trailers repeatedly, then act surprised when the numbers become absurd. According to a new forecast from market intelligence firm Newzoo, forecast puts GTA 6’s launch-week sales anywhere between $3.25 billion and $5.2 billion, based on the game’s already record-setting pre-order campaign.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to arrive on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Pre-orders opened on June 25, giving Rockstar several months to turn anticipation into receipts before anyone outside the company has seen official gameplay.

How strong are GTA 6 pre-orders so far?

Newzoo estimates that players spent about $180 million on digital pre-orders in the final week of June across six major markets: the United States, United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain.

To sketch out the global picture, the firm used Grand Theft Auto V’s player distribution as a guide for other regions. That pushed its estimate for Grand Theft Auto VI’s opening week of worldwide pre-order sales to roughly $260 million.

Newzoo described that as the strongest start to a pre-order campaign ever recorded in its dataset. It also pushed back on viral claims that GTA 6 had already generated $1 billion in pre-orders, which is a useful reminder that the internet remains undefeated at adding extra zeroes when excited.

The demand is not exactly mysterious. Players have been waiting to return to Vice City and explore the new state of Leonida, while expectations around the sequel have become almost comically high. Some insiders have claimed the game is so technically advanced that other studios may not surpass it for 20 years. That is quite a statement for a game still mostly being judged by trailers, leaks, and public longing.

Why Newzoo thinks launch week could be enormous

Newzoo used several pre-order sales curves, then compared how Grand Theft Auto VI might behave against different launch patterns.

The firm believes the most likely fit is what it calls a “proven sequel” model. In that scenario, a huge established franchise pulls in a larger share of its eventual buyers early in the pre-order window, rather than waiting for reviews, streamer reactions, or a cousin’s unsolicited opinion.

Under that model, GTA 6 would generate around $4.5 billion by the end of launch week. Newzoo says that would equal approximately 51 million copies sold, an $88 average selling price.

A more cautious model assumes demand is unusually front-loaded, meaning many of the most eager players buy early and the later sales curve cools more quickly. Even then, the estimate still reaches about $3.25 billion, or roughly 37 million copies.

At the high end, Newzoo’s full range climbs to $5.2 billion. That figure would put the release in a category that makes most entertainment launches look modest, which is not a sentence often written about anything with cars, chaos, and a fictional Florida-inspired state.

what it includes and what it leaves out

These numbers are projections, not official guidance from Rockstar Games or its parent company, Take-Two Interactive. They are based on Newzoo’s modeling, pre-order data, and comparisons with prior sales behavior.

There is another important detail: the forecast counts pre-orders accumulated before release as part of the launch-week total. It is not measuring only purchases made during the seven days after the game becomes available. That distinction matters, especially when a title this large starts collecting money months before launch.

Rockstar has also kept much of the game under wraps. At the time of writing, the studio has released two trailers but has not shown official gameplay footage. Separate leaks, which Rockstar has previously confirmed as legitimate, have pointed to a range of new and more advanced features, though the company has not laid out the full feature-by-feature picture publicly.

Grand Theft Auto VI will launch with a standard edition priced at $79.99 and an Ultimate Edition priced at $99.99. If Newzoo’s modeling lands anywhere near the mark, the game will not just be a major release. It will be a financial event with a controller attached.
