The GTA 6 Netflix special is designed to reach people who have not already decided to buy Rockstar Games’ blockbuster on release day. That makes the presentation more than another trailer. It is also a test of whether video game advertising can be packaged as premium streaming entertainment, complete with a temporary subscription window.

Rockstar announced on August 6 that Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look will premiere on Netflix at 3 p.m. ET on August 27. It will remain exclusive to the service for six hours before arriving at 9 p.m. ET on Rockstar’s YouTube channel and the official GTA 6 website.

Why is Rockstar putting GTA 6 on Netflix?

During an appearance on Bloomberg Breakdown, reporter Jason Schreier asked Take-Two Interactive chief executive Strauss Zelnick whether the presentation would feel like watching a Netflix show.
