“There’s real victims and survivors that were brave enough to really stand up to these very, very powerful people,” she said.
In a March interview with The New York Times, Radziwill offered a similarly blunt assessment. She said Maxwell had been her friend for “five or six years,” adding: “Imagine knowing someone and even being friendly with them and then they turn out to be, like, a monster.”
What records document their friendship?
The available records show more than a passing introduction, although they do not provide evidence that Radziwill participated in any crime. The New York Times reported that she and Maxwell moved through the same New York social circles in the early 2000s, attended events together and exchanged a small number of emails later made public.
Maxwell also photographed the author portrait used for Radziwill’s 2005 memoir. She introduced Radziwill to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, then known as Prince Andrew, whom Radziwill later interviewed for Glamour.
Radziwill told the newspaper that she once saw Epstein at a cocktail party hosted by Maxwell but “never knew” him. She said the friendship with Maxwell ended long before Maxwell’s conduct became publicly known.
The distinction matters. The United States Department of Justice says its Epstein disclosure library contained roughly 3.5 million responsive pages. A person’s name appearing in an email, contact list or social record does not by itself establish criminal conduct, though online discussion has not always handled that basic point with great discipline.
No outlet that reviewed Radziwill’s documented connections reported evidence that she helped Epstein or Maxwell commit their crimes.
How is Bravo using the controversy?
Bravo has placed the issue near the centre of Radziwill’s return, rather than quietly leaving it in an unaired conversation. Season 16 is scheduled to premiere on September 8, and the trailer shows cast member Sai De Silva asking whether Radziwill ever visited Epstein’s private island.
Radziwill emphatically denies the suggestion. “You think I’m part of an international sex trafficking ring?” she responds in the trailer.
The exchange signals that her old association with Maxwell will be a substantial storyline, not merely background material. Cohen’s promotional Q&A continued that approach less than a week before the premiere. Reality television, unsurprisingly, has decided that an uncomfortable subject is still television.
Radziwill has said she views the show as a place to answer questions rather than retreat from them. That may help explain her willingness to return eight years after leaving the main cast, even with her social history receiving fresh examination.
What happened to Epstein and Maxwell?
Federal prosecutors accused Epstein and Maxwell of operating an international sex-trafficking scheme involving underage girls. Epstein died by suicide in a federal jail in August 2019 while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges.
A federal jury convicted Maxwell in December 2021, including on charges related to recruiting and trafficking a minor for Epstein. A judge sentenced her to 20 years in federal prison in June 2022.
Those dates are significant because some early coverage incorrectly said Maxwell was convicted in 2022. The conviction came the previous December; the sentence followed six months later.
For Radziwill, the issue now sits at the intersection of a documented former friendship, a vast archive of released material and Bravo’s enthusiasm for putting difficult personal questions on camera. Her position remains consistent: she knew Maxwell, did not know about the abuse, did not know Epstein personally and never visited his island.
