Paramount’s Call of Duty movie already has a press-tour wrinkle, and it is not about casting, budget, or which campaign gets the big-screen treatment.
Earlier this month, Activision announced that Peter Berg will direct the upcoming film adaptation of its blockbuster military shooter franchise. The movie is currently set to arrive in theaters in 2028. That gives everyone plenty of time to revisit an old interview in which Berg had very little patience for video games, especially military ones.
The resurfaced comments
As first spotted by ResetEra user Neat, Berg spoke with Esquire in 2013 after directing Battleship. During that interview, he was asked about war games, and his answer was not exactly a soft-focus industry compliment.
“Pathetic. Pathetic. Keyboard courage,” Berg said at the time. “Can’t stand it. The only people that I give a Call of Duty get-out-of-jail-free card to are the military. They’re out there serving and they’re bored and they want to entertain themselves? Okay, maybe. Kids? Uh-uh.”
That is a rather direct quote to have floating around when you are now attached to a major studio movie based on Call of Duty, one of the most commercially successful video game franchises in the world.
