The comments came while Jolie was discussing Couture, her 2026 film about a filmmaker who begins to rediscover herself after being diagnosed with breast cancer. The role seems to have made her think about what a woman is allowed to want while still being devoted to her family.
"It took me a second to kind of say, 'Well, she can also love her daughter and be dedicated to her daughter and also need this as a woman and receive this as a woman,'" Jolie said of the character.
How Couture Connects To Her Own Life
Jolie’s connection to the material is personal. In 2013, she underwent a preventative double mastectomy after learning she carried the BRCA1 gene mutation, which can indicate a higher inherited risk of cancer.
That history gives her comments about Couture more weight than the standard promotional interview answer. Jolie was not just talking about a fictional woman finding herself again. She was also talking about what it means to keep living fully after fear, illness, grief, and family responsibility have changed everything.
"Maybe I've come around to being a little bit more the person I used to be," she said.
It is a quiet, revealing line, especially from someone whose private life has been treated like public property for years. Jolie is not presenting a grand reinvention. She is describing the smaller, harder work of noticing what went quiet inside her and asking whether it still belongs.
Her Daughters Helped Change Her Perspective
Jolie also said her daughters have played a role in this new phase. As they have gotten older, their conversations have made her think differently about what she wants for them, and what she may have set aside for herself.
"I'm discovering something now that my daughters are older. They're talking to me as young women, and I'm seeing what I want for them," she said. "I'm seeing what I don't want them to lose and what I want them to hold on to. And it's kind of reminding me what I may have lost."
She added that watching them become young women has brought back parts of herself she had pushed away.
"I think in some way they're bringing me back to my old self. My desire for them to have all of the strength and openness and softness and faith and ferocity is reminding me," Jolie continued. "I think they kind of want me now to not just be 'Mom.' There's a different room for me to be that woman again, that's not just a mom."
Jolie Says She Is Learning To Live Again
Jolie described the change as unexpected. Rather than seeing 51 as an age where life narrows, she said she feels drawn toward freedom again.
"Things are changing, but in a way I didn't expect," she said. "It doesn't feel like I'm 51 and starting to think of being older. I'm thinking I have to live again. Be free again. In a way that maybe life has broken me a little bit."
The emotional stakes are simple, even if the legal history around Jolie and Pitt has not been. After years defined by motherhood, health decisions, litigation, and public scrutiny, Jolie is talking about getting back a part of herself that is not attached to a court filing or a family schedule.
Whether that means dating soon is still unclear. For now, she seems to be leaving the door open, which in celebrity terms is practically a five-act drama. In human terms, it sounds more like someone giving herself permission to want more than survival.
