2026 Emmys Move to Monday for NFL Clash

This is familiar scheduling territory. NBC also aired the ceremony on Monday nights in 2017 and 2022 to avoid conflicts with Sunday Night Football. Apparently, even an event celebrating television must occasionally move aside for television.

Why did Mariska Hargitay agree to host?

Hargitay has spent nearly three decades playing Olivia Benson on NBC’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, but she did not immediately embrace the prospect of leading the ceremony.

“At first I thought, ‘This is ridiculously thankless, a difficult job that everyone gets ripped apart for. Why? Why would I do that?’” she told Variety in August.

The 62-year-old actor had also planned to take a break from appearing on camera, making the offer especially inconvenient. She described it as “the biggest wrench in the works” before deciding that the chance to celebrate the medium mattered more than the risk of becoming the next awards-show host dissected online before the closing credits.

“And then I thought about why I love television,” Hargitay said. “Television, in my opinion, is extraordinarily healing.”

Will Olivia Benson appear during the ceremony?

Hargitay has not revealed exactly how her opening will work, though she said the production team had already developed “five amazing ideas” for it.

She also offered one deliberately vague clue: “I’ve always wanted to do ‘SVU: The Musical.’”

Whether that becomes a full musical opening, a short sketch or merely a well-placed threat remains unclear. What is confirmed is that Hargitay will take the stage on Monday, after NBC’s football obligations have been safely completed.
