Ben Savage’s Boy Meets World Absence Still Looms Over New Reunion Documentary

CelebrityBen Savage’s Boy Meets World Absence Still Looms Over New Reunion Documentary

The Boy Meets World reunion orbit keeps circling one very visible empty chair. At the June 6 premiere of Doc Meets World, Will Friedle addressed Ben Savage’s absence from the documentary and made clear that, while nothing has changed, the door is still open on his end.

What did Will Friedle say about Ben Savage?

Friedle, who played Eric Matthews opposite Savage’s Cory Matthews on the 1990s sitcom, spoke to E! News in a joint interview with Danielle Fishel and Rider Strong at the premiere.

“There’s always hope,” Friedle said. “There’s been no change but everybody’s gotta take their own paths in life. We’re totally fine with that.”

He added that everyone has to decide how they want to revisit their own past, in a careful, diplomatic way. a long-running friendship that has apparently gone quiet.

“Everybody’s gotta look back on their life how they’re gonna look back on their life,” Friedle said. “This is the way we’ve decided to do it. Ben’s decided to go another route.”

Still, Friedle emphasized that the affection remains.

“We love him,” he continued, “and always will and there’s always hope.”

Fishel, who played Topanga Lawrence, backed him up simply: “Couldn’t agree more.”

What is Doc Meets World about?

Doc Meets World follows Friedle, Fishel and Strong during the sold-out national live tour for their rewatch podcast, Pod Meets World. The podcast has become a second life for Boy Meets World, built around the cast revisiting the series, its production, and the messy memories that come with growing up on television.

Savage did not join the podcast, and he also did not participate in the documentary.

That absence matters because Boy Meets World was centered on Cory Matthews, Savage’s character, and because the show’s audience has long associated the cast with a kind of family chemistry. Offscreen relationships, unfortunately for anyone who wants nostalgia to stay tidy, do not always follow sitcom rules.

What has Friedle said about their estrangement?

Friedle has spoken more directly before about the distance between him and Savage. During a February 2025 episode of Pod Meets World, which he cohosts with Strong and Fishel, he described the silence as painful and personal.

“Ben is one of the most important people I’ve ever met in my life and I can’t stand the fact that he won’t speak to us,” Friedle said. “And that’s what it is: He won’t speak to us.”

He said the split did not follow a clear argument, at least not one he understood.

“I can show you the last three years, literally, of messages and in the middle of a conversation with Ben, he just bailed on me,” Friedle said. “Ben absolutely one day woke up and said, ‘I don’t want Will in my life,’ and never told me why.”

E! News previously contacted Savage’s representatives for comment and did not receive a response.

When did the distance become public?

Friedle also discussed the estrangement in 2023, calling it a “sore subject” while describing his early attempts to reconnect after Savage seemed to “disappear.”

“I’ve known him since he was 11 years old, and we have a shared history,” he told Variety at the time. “I tried and tried and tried for months, until finally my wife was like, ‘Why are you doing this to yourself? He obviously doesn’t want you in his life.’”

Friedle is now 49, while Savage is 45. Their history stretches back to childhood, early fame, and a show that still carries emotional weight for viewers who grew up with it. That is part of why the current distance lands so sharply: for fans, this is not just a missing interview in a reunion project. It is a reminder that the people who played a beloved TV family are also adults with private histories, choices and boundaries.

For now, Friedle, Fishel and Strong are continuing with Pod Meets World and Doc Meets World. Savage has chosen not to join them. Friedle’s message, at least publicly, is that the choice is his to make, and that hope remains if he ever chooses differently.
