At that point, the writers’ room had only just opened. “The writers’ room just started this week, and it’s a great room,” Dippold said, adding that the team planned to spend the next 20 weeks writing.
That schedule suggests viewers should not expect new episodes particularly soon. Before cameras can roll, the writers still have to decide how Tom handles the finale’s revelation, what remains of the island’s curse and whether Widow’s Bay tourism officials will finally accept that supernatural sacrifice is poor destination marketing.
Rhys confirmed in an August interview that the cast had met with the writers but received few useful details. He recalled the actors running toward them and demanding, “Tell us about us!” The response was admirably direct: “We don’t know. We genuinely don’t know.”
According to Rhys, the room was still in its “blue sky period,” when writers consider possible directions before moving ideas onto the whiteboard and narrowing them down. He said they refused to reveal those ideas, joking that he is usually the last person told because he has “a kind of a loudmouth.”
What did the season one finale reveal?
The first season ended with the island’s storm finally stopping after custodian Kenny, played by Michael Malvesti, was accidentally sacrificed to the entity. His death solved the immediate weather problem, but it did not end the curse. One descendant of the Warren family remained alive.
At first, Tom believed that descendant was his assistant Ruth, played by K Callan. Ruth then disclosed that she once had a baby with a married man. Tom worked out that the child grew up to become his late wife, making their son Evan, played by Kingston Rumi Southwick, the final living descendant of Richard Warren, portrayed by Hamish Linklater.
The discovery leaves Tom with the exact crisis Dippold had planned from the beginning. She told the Television Academy in June that her original pitch to Apple included this as his final dilemma.
After spending the season doing increasingly frightening things to protect the town and make amends for attracting tourists, Tom must now decide what he is willing to sacrifice when his own son is involved. Civic duty was easier when the potential victims were not on the family tree.
Dippold described it as a “truly impossible dilemma.” Southwick has not revealed what Evan will face next, but he is ready to return. “I’m just excited,” he told E! News. “I’m excited for him and it’s going to be a great season.”
How did the show perform at the 2026 Emmys?
The series entered the 2026 Emmy Awards with 19 nominations, including several of the ceremony’s major comedy categories:

Before the Primetime Emmy ceremony on September 14, the show had already won eight Creative Arts Emmys. Its victories covered casting, cinematography, production design, music composition, music supervision, sound editing and sound mixing. Betty Gilpin also won Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.
The awards attention gives the second season considerable expectations to meet, even while its story remains on a whiteboard. For now, the confirmed details are limited but significant: the show has been renewed, writing is underway, filming is planned for early 2027 and Tom’s next mayoral decision may involve choosing between his island and his son. A routine second term, then.
