The UK government reportedly paid staff to play GTA Online with members of the public as part of an experiment in understanding people’s real lives. According to a report from The Telegraph, the idea was not simply to see who could survive a high-speed police chase, though that was apparently part of the office calendar.

The project tested whether video games could help researchers create what they called an “emotionally safe space” where people might speak more naturally about their experiences than they would in a standard interview.

Why officials were playing GTA Online

The programme reportedly began in late 2024 and involved civil servants spending time with participants inside video games they already played regularly.
