Houston Rockets center Steven Adams expects GTA 6 to cause a temporary decline in professional sports performance when the game launches on November 19, 2026. His theory is straightforward: athletes may be physically present, but their attention could remain somewhere in Vice City.

Adams made the prediction during the Rockets’ media day on September 22. He advised people to monitor the NBA, NFL, NHL and other leagues throughout November, when Rockstar Games finally releases its long-awaited title for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Why does Adams expect sports performance to fall?

“You guys should anticipate November,” Adams said. “So look at the NFL, look at all the leagues, and watch them plummet.”

The center does not expect permanent damage to the sporting calendar. In his estimate, players should regain their normal focus by December, ideally after completing the game rather than spending several months ignoring tactical meetings in favor of exploring the fictional state of Leonida.

“It should come back up, though. Most of the boys will get it done. Hopefully they finish the game,” he said.

Adams also warned that the distraction may extend beyond the people actually competing. Coaches and scouts, apparently no more immune to a major Rockstar release than anyone else, could face an equally unproductive month.

“Coaching as well, by the way. The coaching and scouts are going to be horrendous, just for November, but it should bounce back in December, hopefully.”

There is no evidence yet that the release will affect standings, tactics or player efficiency. There is, however, plenty of time for teams to add console restrictions to their November schedules if they feel unusually cautious.

How widespread is the anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI?

Adams’ comments reflect how interest in Grand Theft Auto VI has moved well beyond the usual gaming audience. The release has become a workplace planning issue, a military recruitment talking point and, for some families, a deeply personal deadline.

A California car company announced that it would pause operations on launch day because employees planned to take time off. Rather than pretend productivity would continue as normal, the business chose the less theatrical option and closed for the day.

A United States Army battalion also reportedly offered soldiers a four-day pass around the launch in exchange for re-enlisting. The Army has not publicly verified the authenticity of the memo, so the offer remains unconfirmed.

One daughter contacted Rockstar Games on behalf of her terminally ill father, hoping he could receive an opportunity to play the game. Her appeal highlighted the difficult reality behind the extended wait for a title first announced years before release.

When will GTA 6 be released?

Rockstar Games has scheduled Grand Theft Auto VI for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game takes players to Vice City and the wider state of Leonida.

Whether professional sports genuinely suffer after launch will become clear soon enough. Adams expects the disruption to last only through November, with players, coaches and scouts recovering in December. That timetable assumes they finish the game promptly, which may be the most ambitious part of his forecast.
