GTA 6 Online could arrive in 2027, according to Twitch Chief Executive Officer Dan Clancy, who says he learned about Rockstar Games’ plans during conversations with the studio. Rockstar has not officially confirmed a new online mode, let alone given it a release window, so apparently the clearest information has come from the head of a streaming platform.
Clancy is the first person known to have direct access to Rockstar who has publicly attached a year to the multiplayer launch. That makes his comments significant, although they still fall short of an announcement from the developer.
What did Dan Clancy say about GTA 6 multiplayer?
Speaking to Bloomberg during a trip to Tokyo Game Show, Clancy said he had “spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans.”
He then outlined what Twitch expects from the game’s release: “You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer.”
If “next year” is meant literally, Clancy is pointing to a 2027 launch for the online component. The main game is currently scheduled to arrive on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S.
Rockstar has said nothing publicly about whether multiplayer will launch separately, how it will connect to the existing service, or whether it will carry the GTA Online name. Clancy’s wording suggests the studio plans to release it after the base game rather than alongside it.
Why has Rockstar not confirmed the online mode?
Secrecy around Grand Theft Auto VI has been standard practice. Rockstar controls official footage and discussion closely, even when the material is already circulating widely.
That approach surfaced again last month when Twitch removed Félix “xQc” Lengyel’s archived GTA 6 reaction video while similar videos from other streamers remained available. The uneven enforcement did little to clarify Rockstar’s rules, but it reinforced how carefully the company manages material connected to the game.
Take-Two Interactive Chief Executive Officer Strauss Zelnick previously offered the nearest thing to an official indication that a new service could coexist with the current one. Asked about the future of GTA Online, he pointed to the company’s handling of NBA 2K Online in China.
“Generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles,” Zelnick said. He noted that NBA 2K Online launched around 2012, followed by NBA 2K Online 2 in 2017.
That example suggests Take-Two may continue supporting the existing GTA Online while introducing its successor. Such an arrangement could reassure players who have spent years building characters, businesses and inventories, though neither Take-Two nor Rockstar has promised it.
Could the launch schedule change again?
Yes, and recent history provides enough evidence without much speculation. Rockstar previously moved GTA 6 to May 2026, then delayed it again to November 19.
The studio disclosed little while those changes were taking shape, following the same pattern now surrounding multiplayer. Clancy’s comment is therefore the strongest indication yet that the online mode is planned for the year after the main game, but the date remains unofficial until Rockstar decides to say so itself.
