Rockstar Games has detailed the GTA 6 weather system, confirming that Leonida will experience hurricanes, tropical storms and highly localized rainfall. One area could be drenched while another remains sunny, recreating the sort of unpredictable Florida weather that makes planning anything outdoors feel slightly optimistic.

The new information comes from Game Informer’s coverage of Grand Theft Auto VI and expands on Rockstar’s earlier confirmation that the game would feature advanced weather technology. Storms will move across the map, rainwater will remain after clouds have passed, and changing wind conditions will affect characters and the surrounding environment.

How localized rain will change Leonida

Owen Shepherd, Rockstar’s vice president of art for lighting and rendering, said the studio rebuilt its approach to weather for the game.

“We have re-engineered our weather system to make everything much more localized and persistent, and really wanted the world to feel dynamically solid and achieve a sense of scale we haven’t felt before,” Shepherd told Game Informer.

Dynamic clouds will travel across Leonida, producing conditions ranging from clear skies to towering storm formations with lightning. Because rainfall is localized, players may be able to stand in sunlight and watch a nearby district receive a thorough soaking.

The evidence will remain after the storm moves elsewhere. Wet roads and persistent puddles can show that rain recently passed through an area, even when players arrive too late to see it. Rainbows may also appear when the lighting and weather align, offering a brief decorative pause before the next criminal emergency.

This persistence suggests the conditions will feel tied to specific locations rather than appearing as one map-wide visual setting. Rockstar wants the weather to leave visible traces, making Leonida’s environment respond to events instead of immediately resetting once the clouds depart.

What dynamic wind affects in GTA 6

Rockstar has also upgraded its wind simulation. The system accounts for offshore breezes after sunset, warm air rising and buildings interrupting airflow. Those factors will influence more than trees swaying politely in the background.

“Hair and debris will swirl around on roof-tops; gusts of wind will blow ripples over the water surface and bend the grass in swamps,” Shepherd explained.

Wind will therefore affect several parts of the world at once, including:

  • Characters’ hair and loose debris
  • Ripples and movement across water
  • Grass and vegetation in swamp areas
  • Airflow around buildings and rooftops

The technology is designed to make weather feel connected across the landscape. A gust can move through vegetation, disturb water and lift debris rather than triggering a single canned effect. It is an elaborate amount of engineering devoted to making sure virtual litter behaves correctly, but visual consistency has never been a small concern for Rockstar.

How severe will hurricanes and tropical storms be?

Tropical storms and hurricanes will combine heavy clouds, strong winds, intense rain, thunder and lightning. Shepherd also described water pouring from roof edges and lampposts as the environment becomes saturated.

Rockstar has not said how frequently these major storms will occur. The company also has not explained whether hurricanes can interrupt missions, alter driving conditions, affect the wider story or cause lasting damage across Leonida.

The confirmation follows several years of speculation. An earlier Amazon listing referred to dynamic weather, while a 2023 report claimed weather would influence driving and water physics. Previous Rockstar job listings mentioned large-scale destruction, prompting theories that hurricanes might damage buildings.

Those listings never confirmed destructible structures tied to extreme weather, and the latest information does not settle the question. Severe storms are officially part of the game, but their full gameplay consequences remain undisclosed. For now, players can expect flooded-looking streets, forceful winds and dramatic skies. Whether a hurricane can ruin a mission as efficiently as the player can remains to be seen.
