Donald Trump turned a question about personal security into a line about optics on Friday, telling reporters in the Oval Office that a bulletproof vest would add too much bulk.
The exchange came after an alleged assassination attempt involving Cole Tomas Allen, who is facing three charges, including attempting to assassinate a sitting president.
Asked whether he would consider wearing a vest, Trump joked that the issue was not only safety, but how it would look on camera.
“If you want to gain 20 to 25 pounds, get a vest ... and live!” he said, drawing laughter in the room.
The comment landed as classic Trump: part deflection, part performance, and very aware of the visual frame around him. But the subject underneath it was not hypothetical. Allen’s case adds to a security picture that has already included Trump being shot in the ear during a previous incident.
For all the humor in the room, the practical question remains straightforward. A bulletproof vest may not flatter a suit, but it exists for a reason. Trump, at least in that moment, made clear he was weighing the protection against the presentation.
