What does the name Aurelius mean?
Aurelius comes from Latin and is commonly associated with meanings including “golden” or “gilded,” according to The Independent. The name is also closely linked to Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher.
The couple have not publicly explained why they selected it. For now, the historical associations are doing plenty of work on their own.
Sean and Kemp Muhl first met at Coachella in 2005 and began dating in 2007. Their relationship has also been a creative partnership. They formed the psychedelic rock group The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger and have collaborated on several other musical projects.
Sean has released four solo albums, five records with his mother, Yoko Ono, and three with The Claypool Lennon Delirium. His production work includes Lana Del Rey’s 2017 album Lust for Life, which featured their duet “Tomorrow Never Came.”
Is Aurelius John Lennon’s first grandchild?
Aurelius is Sean’s first child and John Lennon’s first biological grandchild. The distinction matters because some reports described the baby as the first grandchild of both John and Yoko Ono, which is not accurate.
Ono, 93, already has two grandchildren, Emi and Jack, through her daughter Kyoko Chan Cox. She discussed Kyoko’s children in an earlier interview with The Times. No verified public statement from Ono about Aurelius’s birth had emerged by September 2.
Sean is John and Ono’s only child together. He was born in Manhattan on October 9, 1975, his father’s 35th birthday. John also had Julian with his first wife, Cynthia Lennon.
John was killed on December 8, 1980, when Sean was five. Earlier that year, John and Ono released Double Fantasy, which included “Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy),” his song about fatherhood and watching Sean grow older.

The new arrival comes as Sean has taken a larger role in preserving and managing his father’s cultural legacy. In December 2025, he told CBS Sunday Morning that he had “technically” become its custodian after Ono handled that responsibility for decades.
“But obviously the world is also the custodian of his legacy, I would say,” Sean said. “I’m just doing my best to help make sure that the younger generation doesn’t forget about The Beatles and John and Yoko. That’s how I look at it.”
Aurelius now enters that unusually public family history, although his parents controlled most of the announcement themselves. Mostly. Uncle Julian appears to have reached the publish button first.
