RJ Mitte’s final promise to Luis Moncada was simple: he would call if he needed someone to talk to. Days later, the Breaking Bad actor was found dead at his home in Brownsville, Texas, aged 34.

Mitte’s representative said he died by suicide on Monday, October 12. However, Cameron County Justice of the Peace Cyndi Hinojosa told the Associated Press that an official cause of death had not yet been released and an autopsy would be conducted. She pronounced him dead at approximately 1:30 p.m. The investigation remains open.

No funeral or public memorial arrangements have been announced.

What happened during Mitte and Moncada’s final meeting?

Luis Moncada, who played Salamanca hitman Marco in Breaking Bad, spent time with Mitte in New Mexico shortly before his death. On October 4, the pair attended the 54th Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, where Mitte joined Moncada for his first hot-air-balloon flight.

Moncada told TMZ that he had already noticed something troubling his friend when they met at a Comic Con event in England several weeks earlier. After seeing him again in New Mexico, he became more concerned about Mitte’s emotional wellbeing.

The 49-year-old actor invited Mitte to stay at his home with his son, hoping he could rest away from work and other responsibilities. Mitte declined, explaining that he needed to return home after travelling for more than a month.

Outside Albuquerque airport, Moncada asked him to stay in contact.

“He promised me he’ll call me. He thanked me, bro,” Moncada said. He had urged Mitte to reach out whenever he needed somebody to talk to.

Before leaving, Mitte told him: “I love you, man.”

Moncada recalled watching his friend walk away and wishing he could do more. “If I could, I’m not going to lie, if I could, I would have tied him up and brought him home,” he said.

How have his Breaking Bad colleagues responded?

Moncada described Mitte as his “little brother” in an Instagram tribute, writing: “RIP RJ. I love you and I’ll miss you little brother.”

Giancarlo Esposito, who played Gustavo Fring, remembered Mitte’s kindness, philanthropy and commitment to serving others.

“No words can express what your friendship has meant to me,” Esposito wrote. “You will forever live in my heart, representing how pure love can change the world.”

Bryan Cranston, Mitte’s on-screen father, called the death “devastating.” The two had exchanged messages only weeks earlier and intended to meet for lunch.

“I don’t know if that lunch would have changed his future,” Cranston wrote. “But I do know that I loved him, and thoroughly enjoyed being with him throughout the years on the series, and after the spotlight on Breaking Bad dimmed. I’ll miss you, son.”

Cranston also urged anyone considering suicide to contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Aaron Paul told The Hollywood Reporter: “I am at a loss. I am heartbroken over this news.” Dean Norris called Mitte “a sweetheart of a young man,” while officials in Brownsville praised his generous spirit and support for local families.

Why did RJ Mitte’s work matter beyond Breaking Bad?

Born Roy Frank Mitte III in Jackson, Mississippi, Mitte was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at three. He began playing Walter White Jr. as a teenager and appeared in nearly every episode across the AMC drama’s five seasons.

The role made him internationally recognisable, but its broader significance came from something television has not always handled particularly well: casting a disabled actor as a disabled character without treating either as a novelty.

Mitte used that visibility to campaign for more authentic disability representation and better opportunities across the entertainment industry. His advocacy extended well beyond casting debates.

He served as:

  • An honorary trustee of United Cerebral Palsy
  • A patient ambassador for Shriners Children’s
  • An anti-bullying spokesman
  • President of the Roy F. and Joann Cole Mitte Foundation

The family foundation supported arts, education and children’s programmes in Brownsville. That public-service record explains why tributes have focused not only on a famous television role, but also on the work he pursued after the cameras moved elsewhere, as cameras inevitably do.

What remains unconfirmed about his death?

Mitte’s representative said the actor died by suicide, and TMZ reported that unnamed law-enforcement sources had classified the death that way. The official medical determination, however, remains pending.

Hinojosa told the Associated Press that she could not disclose a cause before the autopsy. That distinction matters. Statements from representatives and reports citing anonymous sources can describe what authorities initially believe, but an autopsy provides the formal finding.

There is also no evidence in the available reporting that Mitte’s cerebral palsy caused or directly contributed to his death. His disability formed an important part of his life and advocacy, but it should not be converted into an unsupported explanation simply because it makes for a tidy narrative.
