“The OG champ-champ, coming for the triple crown,” McGregor told reporters. “Sounds like a hell of a story to me.”
Story is one thing. Timing, durability and five-round pace after years out are less decorative.
What Holloway is trying to prove at 170lb
Holloway brings a 27-9 MMA record and a much busier recent schedule. His move to welterweight follows more than a decade of high-level work at 145lb (65.5kg) and 155lb (70.5kg), including title fights, contender matchups and the sort of late-career experimentation that only looks simple from a chair.
He enters after losing the “BMF” title to former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira at UFC 326 in March. Holloway is ranked fourth at lightweight, but this bout is his official welterweight debut. If he stays at 170lb, a win over McGregor would give him instant visibility in a new title picture, even if rankings committees are not usually known for restraint.
Asked about McGregor’s claim that Holloway will not “lay a glove” on him, Holloway kept it short.
“We’re gonna find out Saturday night,” he said.
McGregor also objected to Holloway discussing a possible December rematch, calling the comments “disrespectful” and insisting a third meeting will not be needed. Holloway’s reply was not built for diplomacy.
“I’m drowning his a**,” Holloway said.
When UFC 329 starts and how to watch
The UFC 329 main card is expected to begin at 9pm ET on Saturday, which is 01:00 GMT on Sunday.
McGregor and Holloway are likely to make their walks to the Octagon at around 12:30am ET on Sunday, or 03:30 GMT. As always with fight-night timing, that depends on how quickly the earlier bouts unfold. Combat sports remain committed to making sleep planning a tactical exercise.
The preliminary card is scheduled to start at about 7pm ET, or 23:00 GMT.

What happened in the first fight
McGregor and Holloway first met on August 17, 2013, at UFC Fight Night 26 in Boston. It was McGregor’s second UFC appearance and a preliminary-card bout, before both fighters became major names in the sport.
McGregor won by unanimous decision, with scores of 30-27, 30-27 and 30-26. His striking created early problems for Holloway, including a heavy uppercut in the second round that briefly hurt the Hawaiian.
The second half of the fight shifted mostly to the mat, where McGregor used top control to secure rounds rather than chase a finish. That detail matters for this rematch because their first meeting was not simply a striking showcase. McGregor had to manage the fight in multiple phases, and he did so while injured.
He suffered an ACL injury during the bout and later required surgery, keeping him out of competition for 11 months.
Recent form: McGregor’s last five fights
McGregor’s last five appearances stretch back to 2016, which is the central issue in any form read. The data helps, but the sample is old enough to come with a warning label.
- Loss to Dustin Poirier by TKO, doctor’s stoppage, round one, July 2021
- Loss to Dustin Poirier by TKO, round two, January 2021
- Win over Donald Cerrone by TKO, round one, January 2020
- Loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov by submission, round four, October 2018
- Win over Eddie Alvarez by TKO, round two, November 2016
That list includes elite opposition, a severe leg injury and long gaps between fights. It does not offer a clean answer on what McGregor will look like in 2026. It does, however, explain why the opening minutes against Holloway will be watched for more than usual timing and range.
Recent form: Holloway’s last five fights
Holloway’s recent record is more current and more varied by weight class. He has faced elite names while moving between divisions, which gives a clearer picture of activity but not necessarily of how he will carry his style at welterweight.
- Loss to Charles Oliveira by unanimous decision, March 2026
- Win over Dustin Poirier by unanimous decision, July 2025
- Loss to Ilia Topuria by third-round knockout, October 2024
- Win over Justin Gaethje by fifth-round knockout, April 2024
- Win over Jung Chan-sung by third-round knockout, August 2023
The key tactical question is whether Holloway’s volume striking and durability will hold up against bigger welterweights. Against McGregor, the size question is less extreme than it would be against a career 170lb contender, but the extra weight still changes pace, exchanges and clinch work.
Are any titles on the line?
No championship belt is on the line in the UFC 329 main event.
That does not make the bout low-stakes. Holloway is entering a new division while still holding a lightweight ranking, and McGregor is attempting to re-establish himself as a credible contender after years away from active competition.
The official title picture at welterweight will not be settled on Saturday. The promotional picture may move very quickly, because it often does when McGregor is involved. This is where sporting logic and business gravity occasionally pretend they are the same thing.
Who fights in the UFC 329 co-main event?
The co-main event is a lightweight contender bout between France’s Benoit Saint-Denis and England’s Paddy Pimblett.
Saint-Denis, ranked fifth, enters with a 17-3 MMA record and a grappling-heavy style that can slow opponents down and force long defensive sequences. Pimblett, ranked ninth at 23-4, is chasing the highest-ranked win of his UFC career.
The matchup matters right away in a division currently led by champion Justin Gaethje. Pimblett fought for an interim title in the main event of UFC 324 in January but lost a decision to Gaethje. Gaethje later became undisputed champion by beating Ilia Topuria at UFC Freedom 250 in June.
For Saint-Denis, this is a chance to turn pressure and control into a result that puts him near the title picture. For Pimblett, it is a chance to prove he belongs in the division’s upper tier against a ranked opponent with less interest in theater than positional damage.
What other main-card fights matter?
Cory Sandhagen meets Mario Bautista in a bantamweight bout with title-eliminator implications. Sandhagen, 18-6, is trying to earn another championship opportunity. Bautista, 17-3, has won nine of his last 10 fights and is looking for the defining win that turns a good run into a real title argument.
At flyweight, former title challenger Brandon Royval faces England’s Lone’er Kavanagh. Royval, 17-9, is ranked fourth and defending that position against the fifth-ranked Kavanagh, who is 10-1 and has earned a reputation as a dangerous finisher. Five of Kavanagh’s wins have come by KO/TKO or submission.
The main card opens at lightweight with veteran King Green against Terrance McKinney. Green, listed at 35-17 with one no contest, brings a boxing-heavy approach. McKinney, 18-8, is more explosive and has finished eight UFC victories inside the first round.
