One post aimed the criticism directly at Fallon as a father, writing: "You’re a disgrace @jimmyfallon have this disgusting man on your show. You have daughters. Shame on you." Fallon shares two daughters, aged 11 and 12, with his wife, producer Nancy Juvonen, whom he married in 2007.
What Happened During McGregor’s Appearance
Fallon, who has hosted The Tonight Show since 2014, kept the conversation focused on McGregor’s fighting career and public return.
The host reminisced about the last time they filmed together and went out drinking afterward, telling McGregor, "We’ll have to do it again!" He also introduced the fighter in highly flattering terms, saying, "You’re considered one of the best MMA fighters in the world," and referred to him as "my man."
McGregor, whose nickname is The Notorious, said he was "excited" and "ready to rock" after being away from competition for five years. He is scheduled to face Holloway on July 11 at UFC 329.
Asked what he feels when facing an opponent, McGregor replied: "You have to be calm; you have to be composed. You have to trust your training and your discipline. There’s no hiding in the Octagon."
That line landed very differently for viewers who felt the interview ignored the civil judgment against him.
The Civil Case Involving Nikita Hand
Hand’s case drew major attention in Ireland and beyond. During the trial, the court heard evidence about the injuries she suffered after the alleged assault at a Dublin hotel in 2018.
A paramedic who examined Hand the following day told the court she had not seen "someone so bruised" in a long time.
Dr Daniel Kane, a gynaecologist and forensic examiner in sexual assault cases, also gave evidence. He said Hand was "shaking and crying" when he examined her and described bruising on her face, arms, fingers, forearms, knuckles, legs, lower back and buttocks.
The court also heard that Hand had a 9cm scratch on her left breast, and that forceps were needed to remove a tampon she had been wearing the previous night after it became "wedged inside."
After the verdict, Hand said she felt "justice has been served" and described the case as a "nightmare."
"It’s something that I’ll never forget for the rest of my life," she said.
McGregor Denied Wrongdoing And Appealed
The jury heard that when McGregor was originally interviewed by police, he answered "no comment" around 100 times.
After the civil verdict, McGregor issued a public statement denying wrongdoing and saying the sex was consensual. He wrote that he had made mistakes, saying: "Six years ago, I should have never responded to her outreaches. I should have shut the party down. I should never have stepped out on the woman I love the most in the world. That’s all on me."
He continued: "As much as I regret it, everything that happened that night was consensual and all the witnesses present swore to that under oath. I have instructed my legal team to appeal the decision."
McGregor added: "I can’t go back and I will move forward. I am beyond grateful to my family, friends and supporters all over the world who have stayed by my side."
His legal team appealed on the basis that they believed his police interview answers should not have been put before the jury. The appeal judges unanimously dismissed the appeal "in its entirety."
Hand said the appeal had "retraumatised" her "over and over again."
After the ruling, she said: "To every survivor out there, I know how hard it is, but please, don’t be silenced. You deserve to be heard; you also deserve justice. Today, I can finally move on and try to heal."
Public Anger Has Followed McGregor Beyond Court
The civil case has stayed a flashpoint because it shows how celebrity, sport and accountability collide, when institutions suddenly find room for complicated men again.
At the time of the court case, hundreds of people demonstrated in Dublin in what organisers described as "utter solidarity" with Hand. The protest was organised by Rosa, a socialist feminist movement group, and coincided with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
That is why Fallon’s interview provoked such a strong reaction. For critics, the issue was not that McGregor spoke about a fight. It was that one of American television’s most visible entertainment platforms treated him as a straightforward comeback guest, with no visible acknowledgement of the civil judgment that has shaped his public reputation.
