McDonald’s Pokémon collab in Japan is leaning hard into the kind of small collectible that makes adults suddenly very serious about fast food packaging. To mark Pokémon’s 30th anniversary, McDonald’s Japan is releasing a Summer Chance Bag filled with themed merchandise, food coupons, and one especially charming timer shaped around Pikachu and fries.
What comes in McDonald’s Japan’s Summer Chance Bag?
The promotion centers on the Summer Chance Bag, a limited release bundle priced at ¥3,900, or about $24.11. It includes a mix of exclusive Pokémon items and McDonald’s food vouchers, which is a very efficient way to turn lunch into a minor collecting event.
The headline item is the Popping Pikachu Potato Timer. It shows Pikachu perched on top of a pack of McDonald’s fries. When the timer hits zero, a short jingle plays and Pikachu pops out of the fry carton. It is, by design, difficult to be cynical about a tiny electric mouse emerging from potatoes.
Fans can also get color-changing cups that shift when filled with a cold drink. The cups come in three designs and feature Pikachu with the original Kanto starter Pokémon: Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle.
