GTA 6 Relationship Mechanic Fuels TikTok Row

The GTA 6 relationship mechanic has become the subject of a very modern dispute: whether dating a fictional character counts as a problem for a real couple. TikTok creator Shelby Haas told her roughly one million followers that her fiancé would not be playing Rockstar Games’ next blockbuster after she learned about its romance features.

The objection quickly spread beyond one video. Several women posted similar warnings, while other players pointed out that the game has not yet been released and that Rockstar says the supposedly compulsory romance is not compulsory at all. A useful detail, even if it arrived after the outrage had already clocked in for work.

What did Shelby Haas say about GTA 6?

Haas, who posts under the name diaryofasalesgirl, said: “In absolutely no human way is my fiancé playing GTA 6.” Her fiancé has been identified as fitness influencer Alex Eubank.

In the video, Haas claimed players would have to maintain a relationship with a woman, send her messages, respond before she became angry and take her on dates. She also objected to reports of strip clubs and a nudist community in the game.

“Don’t let your boyfriend, or fiancé or husband play GTA 6,” she concluded.

The clip attracted about five million views and turned into a wider TikTok argument over whether virtual romance could qualify as cheating. Some commenters thanked Haas for the warning. Others questioned whether a fictional relationship should create this much concern, while one player offered a fairly efficient comparison: “I do worse things in The Sims.”

Another woman had a simpler plan, saying she intended to play GTA 6 alongside her partner. Discussions in Reddit communities dedicated to the series produced similar responses from women planning to play either alone or with partners, rather than supervise someone else’s controller use.

Is romance mandatory in GTA 6?

No, according to Rockstar North head of development and co-studio head Rob Nelson. He said players can engage with the romantic side of the story if they like the idea, but they can also ignore it without being penalised.

“I have to say it feels great, if you are into it as a concept,” Nelson told IGN. “Don’t bother with it if you aren’t. Up to you.”

Nelson said Rockstar did not want to “foist” romance on players. Reports about the system indicate that dates can involve ordinary shared activities or criminal jobs, giving players some control over how the relationship develops.

That distinction matters because Haas’s warning rested on the claim that players have to maintain the romance. Rockstar’s account says otherwise.

Jason and Lucia, the game’s two central characters, still need to remain together for much of the main story. Nelson explained that the circumstances of the plot require them to work as “partners in crime,” but GamesRadar reported that they do not need to stay romantically close. Cooperation is built into the narrative. Regular affectionate texting apparently is not.

Why has the argument become so large?

The debate combines relationship anxiety with the enormous attention surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI. Almost any new detail about the game now receives the sort of scrutiny normally reserved for public policy, except public policy rarely includes arguments about fictional strip clubs.

Destructoid, Gulf News, GamerSky and Taiwan’s United Daily News all reported that Haas was not alone. Multiple women posted objections to their partners playing the game. Destructoid also reported that Haas argued video games were making men less intelligent.

Critics responded that a virtual relationship should not destabilise a real one and suggested that, if it does, the underlying issue may be larger than Rockstar’s dialogue system. The dispute also carries a conspicuous gender assumption: that men will play GTA 6 while women monitor the consequences.

Lucia complicates that framing. She is one of the game’s two playable leads, and discussions among female GTA fans have raised the possibility that her role could broaden the series’ audience. Plenty of women are waiting to play the game themselves. They may even take Jason on dates, commit crimes with him or ignore the romance entirely, all without filing a domestic incident report.

What has Rockstar confirmed about the game?

Grand Theft Auto VI takes place in Leonida, Rockstar’s fictional version of Florida, and includes a modern version of Vice City. The company said its extended presentation used footage captured in-game on PlayStation 5.

Rockstar initially planned to release GTA 6 on May 26, 2026, but delayed it to November 19, 2026 for additional polish. No later change to that date or to the optional relationship system had been announced by September 2.

The game is often described as having spent 13 years in development, but that figure mainly measures the time since Grand Theft Auto V arrived in 2013. Rockstar has not confirmed that GTA 6 remained in continuous full production throughout that entire period.

The commercial expectations are substantial. Take-Two Interactive reported in May 2026 that the Grand Theft Auto franchise had sold more than 470 million copies worldwide. An earlier company update placed Grand Theft Auto V alone above 225 million sales.

With an audience that large, GTA 6 was always going to generate controversy alongside revenue. For now, the latest dispute appears to be less about what Rockstar requires players to do and more about what social media fears they might enjoy doing. The game permits virtual romance. It does not appear to require a real-world relationship summit beforehand.
