Matt Damon’s The Odyssey prep apparently came with repeated screams from his trailer, loud enough to make Robert Pattinson and Tom Holland wonder whether something had gone badly wrong next door. The answer was less dramatic, though only slightly. Damon was deliberately shredding his voice so he could sound older as Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic.
Why Robert Pattinson thought something was wrong
Pattinson described the moment during an MTV U.K. video interview, saying Damon was in the trailer beside him when the noises started.
“Matt was in the trailer next to me and he was making these noises,” Pattinson said. “He is such a nice guy … I thought he was on the phone and I thought he was a complete psycho. He was just screaming and screaming and screaming. I thought he was having a really bad toilet experience.”
That’s one way to discover a co-star’s process.
Pattinson later learned Damon was not in distress and wasn’t placing the world’s strangest phone call. He was trying to rough up his voice to better match a battle-worn version of Odysseus.
