The vocal strain was only part of Damon’s physical commitment to the role. Earlier this year, the Oscar nominee said on the “New Heights” podcast that he slimmed down significantly for the film, dropping to 167 pounds.

“I lost a lot of weight. [Nolan] wanted me lean but strong,” Damon said. “Just because of this other thing that I did with my doctor, I stopped eating gluten. I used to walk around at between 185 and 200, and I did that whole movie at 167. And I haven’t been that light since high school. So it was a lot of training and a really strict diet.”

The shift marks a sharp contrast with Damon has gone the other way before. For 2009’s “The Informant,” he gained 30 pounds, telling EW at the time that he did it by “eating like crazy and drinking dark beer.”

“Between meals on set, I’d eat a No. 1 Value Meal at McDonald’s and then Doritos on top of it,” he said. “It was absolute heaven.”

“The Odyssey” is directed by Christopher Nolan and stars Damon as Odysseus, with Pattinson and Holland also among the high-profile cast. Universal Pictures will release the film in theaters on July 17.
