Janelle describes herself as “flabbergasted,” while Meri says, “I was actually surprised when I was told that Kody and Robyn weren’t coming back to the show.”
TLC does not reveal whether the couple chose to leave permanently or simply stepped away from this season. The trailer concentrates instead on how Kody’s former wives respond, allowing the unanswered question to do some promotional work. Reality television remains very efficient in that department.
What will season 21 focus on instead?
With Kody and Robyn absent, the series brings Christine, Janelle and Meri together for a reunion. Their shared history does not appear to have made the meeting especially comfortable.
“This is going to be awkward,” Christine says before seeing the other women. Meri is equally restrained: “It’s not like I’m going to walk in and go for a hug.”
The season will also follow new developments in the romantic lives of Janelle and Meri. Christine, meanwhile, faces fresh difficulties with her husband, David Woolley. The trailer does not provide full details, but it makes clear that the former sister wives now occupy the centre of the series rather than serving as supporting players in Kody’s household disputes.
That shift follows years of upheaval for the Brown family. Christine ended her spiritual marriage to Kody in 2021 after 25 years together. Janelle and Meri separated from him not long afterwards, leaving Robyn as his only wife.
How did the family breakups affect Kody and Robyn?
The move from a plural marriage to monogamy did not produce an entirely peaceful reset for Kody and Robyn. In a January episode, Kody said the repeated family separations had placed pressure on their relationship.
“Robyn and I are fighting for our marriage and our life together,” he said. “We have been going through four years or more of breakup with the family.”
Kody added that their relationship worked best “when I’m being me, when I’m being brave and kind.” Robyn offered a similar account, saying the couple still experienced periods when their relationship felt normal and happy.
Then, she said, something would happen and Kody would revert to “the angry divorced guy.”
Season 21 will not show what happens next in their marriage. Instead, Sister Wives will continue with the three women who left Kody, a reversal that would have seemed unlikely when the series premiered 16 years ago. The family structure has changed, the cast has changed, and TLC has decided the cameras can keep rolling anyway.
