This year, he returned not only as a familiar star on the Croisette, but as a filmmaker. Travolta brought Propeller One-Way Night Coach, his directorial debut, to the festival. The film is based on his 1997 children’s book of the same name.

During the May 15 event, Cannes director Thierry Frémaux surprised him with an honorary Palme d’Or. The moment clearly landed with Travolta, who told the crowd, according to Variety, “This is beyond the Oscar.”

He added, “Surprise complètement! I can’t believe this. This is the last thing I expected.”

Travolta described the honor as a “humbling moment,” especially because he had not assumed the film would be selected at all.

“I had no expectation that my film would be accepted,” he said of Propeller One-Way Night Coach. “And when Thierry said it was not only accepted but it was making history because it would be the first film ever accepted that early, I cried like a baby because I just couldn’t believe it.”

The film follows a young airplane enthusiast traveling to Hollywood with his mother, a premise that has a direct personal connection for Travolta. He called it the “most personal film he’s ever done,” and explained that the story draws from the women who shaped his early life.

“It’s really a mixture of my sister and my mother because they both influenced me so deeply,” he shared, “and they were responsible for all my hopes and dreams, and they watched me make them come true.”

He added, “So, this is just a little taste of my origins and what it was like to be me when I was little.”

For an actor whose public image has been tied to major pop-culture milestones for decades, the Cannes moment offered something quieter: a personal project, a family appearance, and an unexpected tribute on one of film’s biggest stages.
