EntertainmentGTA 6 Discs Are Reportedly Not Planned

For players who still like their games with an actual object inside the box, the latest word on GTA 6 discs is not especially comforting. A new report says Rockstar Games currently has no plans to print disc-based copies of Grand Theft Auto VI, either for launch or in the months after.

Rockstar opened pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI on June 25, laying out multiple editions of the long-awaited sequel ahead of its November 19, 2026 release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The game will be sold digitally and through selected retailers, but the boxed version is not a traditional physical release.

What Rockstar’s boxed GTA 6 version actually includes

According to Rockstar’s own pre-order details, the so-called physical version of Grand Theft Auto VI will come with a download code rather than a disc. Those boxed editions are set to be available from November 12, giving buyers time to pre-load the game before launch day.

That means anyone buying from a store will still need to download the game digitally. The box exists. The code exists. The disc, apparently, does not. A bold interpretation of the word “physical,” but here we are.

The news already frustrated players who prefer traditional copies, especially collectors and anyone who values being able to resell, lend, or keep a game independent of a digital storefront. Grand Theft Auto VI is not exactly a niche release, so its move away from discs lands as more than a small packaging choice.

Why some fans thought discs might still arrive later

A bit of hope appeared online after a Rockstar Support email began circulating. The message reportedly came in response to a question about whether Grand Theft Auto VI would receive a disc-based version.

That email said players would be able to acquire a “physical copy during the following months.” Some fans read that as a sign that Rockstar might release proper discs after the initial launch window.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, that reading is not what Rockstar meant. The outlet reports that a source familiar with the company’s plans said there are currently “no plans” to print discs at launch or in the months following release.

The report says the support email was referring to the already announced code-in-a-box version, not a separate disc edition coming later.

Why the wording still matters

This is not the same as Rockstar publicly declaring that Grand Theft Auto VI will never, under any circumstances, receive a disc release. Companies leave themselves room, sometimes because plans change and sometimes because clear answers are apparently bad for business.

Still, the practical message for players is fairly direct: do not expect a disc version to appear around launch, or shortly after it, unless Rockstar announces a change.

For many buyers, that may not matter much. Digital game purchases have become the default for a large share of the console audience, and analysts have already suggested that the absence of a disc is unlikely to seriously dent sales. Grand Theft Auto VI is still expected to be one of the biggest entertainment launches of all time.

But for the players who care about physical media, this is a significant shift. A disc can be traded, loaned, displayed, archived, or kept as a working copy in a way a download code cannot. Once the code is redeemed, the “physical” product becomes mostly a box and a memory.

A major franchise moves further into digital territory

The decision stands out because Grand Theft Auto is one of gaming’s biggest franchises, not a small release quietly testing the market. When a game of this scale treats retail copies as download wrappers, it signals where major publishers believe the industry is headed.

For Rockstar, the calculation is likely straightforward. Digital distribution gives publishers more control, fewer manufacturing complications, and less reliance on the second-hand market. For some players, it also means easier access and faster pre-loading.

For others, it means losing one of the last practical reasons to buy a boxed game at all.

Grand Theft Auto VI will still arrive with enormous attention when it launches on November 19, 2026. The question is not whether people will show up. They will. The question is what, exactly, they will be allowed to own when they do.
