George Clooney used a major Hollywood honor Monday night to step into a very public late-night fight.

At the 51st Chaplin Award Gala on April 27, where Clooney was celebrated for his film career, the actor and director defended Jimmy Kimmel after President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump called for ABC to fire him over a joke on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, according to Variety.

Clooney’s point: a joke is not a command

The dispute began after Kimmel aired a mock version of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on his late-night show last Thursday. During the segment, he joked that Melania Trump had “the glow of an expectant widow.”
