Fiona Lowe’s cause of death has been confirmed after the 13-year-old daughter of actor Chad Lowe died in Los Angeles this week. The County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner classified her manner of death as suicide.
Fiona was pronounced dead at a hospital at 1:14am on Tuesday, September 29. She would have turned 14 in November. The medical examiner said her body could be released to her family.
Her parents announced the death on Wednesday, saying they were “deeply heartbroken.” Their statement also included information about the US 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
“She was adored by her sisters and she was deeply loved by her parents,” the family said. “In fact, she was the light of our lives. Her passing is devastating for our entire family, and we ask for prayers and privacy at this time.”
Who was Fiona Lowe?
Fiona was the second of three daughters shared by Chad Lowe, 58, and producer Kim Painter. Her sisters are Mabel, 17, and Nixie, 10. She was also the niece of actor Rob Lowe.
Chad marked Fiona’s 13th birthday with an affectionate Instagram post in November 2025. “Celebrating Fiona officially becoming a teen today!! Keep dancing through life FiBear! Love you soooo much!!” he wrote.
The family has not released further details about the circumstances surrounding her death. Their public statement focused on Fiona’s place within the family and asked that they be allowed privacy while grieving.
Chad and Kim married in 2010. She is his second wife, following his marriage to actor Hilary Swank from 1997 until 2007.
The family previously lost its home in the Palisades fires
The Lowes had endured another major upheaval less than two years before Fiona’s death. Their Los Angeles home was destroyed in the Palisades wildfires, and in February 2025 Chad shared a photograph of the family embracing during a visit to the ruins.
“Almost a month after we evacuated our girls finally got to go back to see what’s left of their home,” he wrote at the time.
He praised his daughters for how they had handled the disaster, describing their response as “nothing short of remarkable.” Chad added that helping them through the aftermath had become his central concern.
“Being their dad is my life’s greatest joy and privilege,” he wrote.
In the same post, the actor said the experience had reminded him that people cannot always control what happens to them, but can decide how to respond. He said he was proud of Kim and their daughters for trying to make the best of an “extraordinarily difficult circumstance,” and again praised their resilience.
