An old concert clip said to come from a 1970s Elvis Presley performance has stirred Elvis time traveller theories online, after viewers spotted someone in the audience appearing to hold up what looks, at first glance, like a mobile phone. Naturally, the internet went straight to the least complicated explanation: illegal time tourism.
What viewers think they saw in the Elvis concert clip
The footage has spread because of a brief moment in the crowd during one of Elvis' 1970s concerts. A person appears to be holding an object in a way that looks familiar to modern viewers, upright, hand-level, and suspiciously phone-shaped.
That is all it took. Some social media users have suggested the person looks like they are recording the show on a modern device, which would be a neat trick given that consumer smartphones were still several decades away.
The clip has now joined the pile of old photos and videos that get treated as possible proof that someone slipped through history with better technology than everyone else.
Why the theory is not exactly airtight
That said, there are more grounded possibilities than a time traveller attending an Elvis Presley concert.
