The withdrawals leave Sheeran with no announced supporting acts for the remaining shows. A decision apparently intended to resolve one problem has therefore produced several more, which is rarely considered the efficient option in tour management.
Replacing the performers would come with fresh costs, assuming suitable artists could be booked at short notice. If no replacements are found, Sheeran may need to extend his own set or restructure the shows to fill the time previously allocated to the opening acts.
That solution also has limits. Stadium concerts operate under strict curfews, and running late can result in fines linked to noise restrictions. More Ed Sheeran is commercially useful, but local authorities tend to remain unmoved by encore enthusiasm.
What would cancelling the tour dates cost?
Estimates cited for cancelling the tour leg range from $60 million to $100 million. That figure would cover obligations including crew wages, performer payments, venue and production costs, lighting, transport and the wider machinery required to move a stadium show between cities.
The potential losses extend beyond immediate expenses. Sheeran’s previous tours show the scale of revenue involved. According to figures reported by Nine:
- The Mathematics Tour grossed $875 million.
- The Divide Tour grossed $776 million.
Those totals do not reveal the exact value of the current North American dates, but they provide some context for why cancelling an entire run would be financially severe. Stadium tours are large travelling businesses, complete with payrolls, equipment, contracts and deadlines. Simply stopping one is not quite the same as cancelling dinner plans.
Sheeran also said he would not cancel shows because fans had already made arrangements and because touring workers depend on the dates for their income.
What other losses could the tour face?
Even if every concert proceeds, the absence of support artists may still reduce revenue. Merchandise connected to those performers will no longer be available at venues, cutting potential sales for artists and vendors.
There may also be longer-term consequences. The controversy could affect Sheeran’s reputation among fans and musicians, while making future collaborations or support bookings more complicated. Any resulting loss of work could reduce future earnings, although the financial effect cannot yet be calculated.
The immediate choice was therefore not simply between keeping Macklemore and losing all income. Cancelling would have carried a vast bill, while continuing without support acts creates its own operational and reputational costs. Neither route arrives with a particularly cheerful spreadsheet.
What has Ed Sheeran said?
Sheeran broke his silence by distancing himself from the decision to remove Macklemore. He said the rapper’s agreement was with the tour promoter rather than with him personally.
“Macklemore coming off tour was the promoter’s decision, it was not mine. Macklemore’s contract for the tour was with the promoter, not me,” Sheeran said.
He also defended the decision to continue with the scheduled concerts, pointing to the fans, crew members and performers whose plans and income rely on the tour.
“I would never let down the fans who had made plans, nor would I abandon the touring crew and the other support acts and musicians who rely on me for work and to make a living.”
Sheeran’s representatives were previously contacted for further comment. For now, the Loop Tour is set to continue, only without the full supporting lineup it had at the start of September.
