Dave Franco on His Relationship With James Franco

Dave Franco’s relationship with James Franco is “complicated,” but the actor says he still loves his older brother and remains grateful for the guidance he received early in his career. Speaking on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, Dave also explained that years of building his own résumé have finally allowed him to emerge from a very large and increasingly uncomfortable family shadow.

For much of his early career, Dave was introduced as “James Franco’s little brother,” a label that Hollywood applied with its usual commitment to nuance. Roles in 21 Jump Street, the horror film Together with his wife Alison Brie, and Seth Rogen’s series The Studio have since helped establish him as a successful actor in his own right.

The subject came up while Dave and Shepard were discussing interviews with relatives and close friends. Dave recalled an Esquire feature in which he interviewed James and found himself asking questions the brothers had apparently never discussed before.

“Woah, we’ve never talked about any of this,” Dave remembered thinking. He said the conversation became vulnerable, but also gave them a chance to learn more about each other.

After someone on the podcast remarked that they had almost forgotten Dave and James were related, Dave acknowledged that the situation was not straightforward.

“I’ve felt a lot more [like] my own person in recent years,” he said. “It’s a complicated thing where I love my brother and I’m so grateful for the advice he gave me coming through this business.”

Dave said he benefited from watching how James handled different situations in Hollywood and would “always be grateful” for those lessons. At the same time, he believes his own body of work has become substantial enough for audiences and the industry to judge him separately.

“I think in recent years I’ve kind of gone down my path long enough that people have started to give me my own due,” he said, adding that the comparison was especially difficult because James is “a very talented” actor.

What happened to James Franco’s career

James Franco largely disappeared from mainstream Hollywood after sexual misconduct allegations emerged in 2018, while he was campaigning for awards recognition for The Disaster Artist.

An ex-girlfriend accused him of sexual assault, while several former students from his acting school sued him and alleged sexually inappropriate conduct. The claims also focused on a class involving sex scenes. James later admitted that he had slept with students, although he maintained that those relationships were separate from the class.

Dave has not publicly addressed the specific allegations against his brother. James, however, discussed the pressure placed on people around him during a 2021 appearance on The Jess Cagle Show.

“I don’t want Seth [Rogen] or my brother or anyone to have to answer for me anymore,” James said.

Rogen, who had collaborated with James on projects including Pineapple Express, This Is the End and The Interview, has since said he no longer plans to work with him. Dave continued working with Rogen and appeared in The Studio, making the professional separation fairly plain without requiring a family press conference.

How Dave Franco built a separate career

Dave’s comments suggest he is trying to hold two positions at once: affection for his brother and ownership of a career that no longer depends on the Franco surname being followed by an explanation.

His acting work has ranged from studio comedy to horror and television, while he has also moved behind the camera. That steady expansion has made comparisons with James less automatic, even if the family connection has not vanished.

Shepard offered his own assessment, comparing the brothers with Sylvester Stallone and Frank Stallone before suggesting Dave had risen to become a “co-Sylvester.” It was not the most scientifically rigorous measure of career independence, but Dave appeared to understand the point.

The podcast appearance remains one of his rare public comments about James. He did not defend or discuss the misconduct allegations themselves, instead focusing on the personal relationship, the advice he received and the distance he has created professionally.

In other words, Dave is not pretending the connection does not exist. He is simply making clear that, after years of work, it no longer defines him.
