Bride Charging Guests $250 Sparks Backlash

EntertainmentBride Charging Guests $250 Sparks Backlash

A bride charging guests $250 to attend her wedding has drawn criticism online after a member of the bridal party said the fee would cover a shared Airbnb stay, food, and drinks, but not necessarily a real bed. Romance is alive, apparently, and it comes with itemized lodging terms.

The situation surfaced on Reddit, where a user posting as littlemamabel said they were the maid of honor. According to the post, the wedding is set for a Monday, with guests told to arrive on Sunday and leave on Wednesday.

What were guests being asked to pay for?

The $250 charge was described as a per-person cost to take part in the full wedding stay. The Airbnb would serve several purposes at once: accommodation, ceremony venue, and reception space.

“So the wedding will be a Monday, they’re telling people to come in on Sunday & leave Wednesday. $250 covers the Airbnb, food, and drink for the entire stay. You pay the $250 regardless of when you come or leave. The Airbnb is also the venue and reception,” the Redditor wrote.

That structure means guests would owe the same amount even if they arrived late, left early, or only attended part of the event. The fee also appeared to function as the RSVP, making attendance tied directly to payment.

Destination weddings and group rentals have made guest costs more complicated in recent years. It is not unusual for attendees to pay for travel and lodging. What raised eyebrows here was the combination of a mandatory contribution, a multi-day stay, and unclear sleeping arrangements.

Why the sleeping setup made people angrier

The poster said the couple was not asking for traditional wedding gifts. Instead, guests were being asked to contribute to the honeymoon. That request landed badly for some readers because the same guests were also expected to pay for the wedding stay.

The maid of honor added that she and her partner would not have a private room or bed. “I know the bride, the groom, and the bride’s parents. Me and my partner would have to stay on an air mattress in a room with other guests occupying the bunk beds,” she wrote.

That detail became the part people could not quite move past. A shared Airbnb may make financial sense for a group, but asking a guest to pay $250 per person to sleep on an air mattress in a room with other people is a harder sell, especially for someone close enough to be in the wedding party.

How Reddit reacted to the wedding fee

The response was largely critical, with commenters calling the request excessive and urging the poster to decline.

One person wrote, “$250 is crazy for an air mattress in a shared room. I’d decline and just stay somewhere else. If they have a problem with that, I wouldn’t go.”

Another said, “$250 to sleep on an air mattress is a hard no from me for that many nights.”

Others felt the issue was not only the money, but the expectations attached to it. One commenter wrote, “I literally wouldn’t go to any of it, lol. If they are a good friend, I’d send a gift.” Another added, “The whole thing is utterly disrespectful.”

The post struck a familiar nerve: weddings are emotional, expensive, and often full of unspoken expectations. Guests usually expect to spend something. But when attendance starts to feel like a bill with bedding uncertainty, sympathy can run out quickly.
